Anyone know anything about Pern?

Hey guys. I'm trying to plot a Sherlock AU set in Pern at the moment; I'm thinking something's killing the dragons/stealing eggs/some fucking thing and Sherlock investigates. Beyond that, I haven't read the books for a few years and I'd appreciate any help people could offer. Like, for example does anyone know if you were going to train as a Harper ( Read more... )

but sometimes i feel exploi-ted!, writing, sherlock, stitchin n bitchin: i does them

Ah, I'm sure I'll limp along. If it's not 100% perfect then I'm sure I'll be able to live with myself afterwards, lol. As I'm stealing Pern as a setting, I think I can play fast and loose with the canon of it a bit.

I don't think I've read them even longer than that, but ... hmm, didn't Piemur (the young boy soprano at the Harper Hall when Menolly first arrived) mention his foster mother at some point? So yes, you could have.

Mind you, Anne McCaffery was a bit hazy on the rules and changed things at least once, from stating explicity that it was preferred that green riders were gay males (and making Mirrim the first known female green rider in the Ninth Pass) to stating that the way they Handled Things was to have their het partners nearby during a mating flight rather than have to deal with Teh Gay, heaven forfend. So you've got a bit of leeway IMHO.

edit Read them in even longer than that. Sheesh. *facepalms*

I think if I manage to get it done, I go on ahead with what I had in mind in that score. Lol, didn't Jaxom's stepfather change from being a blue rider to a brown rider to avoid Teh Gay as well?

Actually, if you don't mind doing me a huge favor, I tested the waters a bit by writing a few hundred words here. Could you give me your thoughts on it? Even just a "Works as a potential story in it's own right" or "Sounds clunky, forced and awkward" would help XD

I'd forgotten Lytol was originally a blue rider! And that's by no means McCaffrey's GayFail. This from a woman who claimed to be pro gay before the gay liberation -- mind you, it took the form of coming up with the idea of a 'Wendy' -- basically, a woman to housekeep or bear children for gay or bi men. Ugh. On the housekeeping front alone, all the gay men I know or know of leave me abnd most women for dead on the housekeeping/anal neatness front.

Not a problem, just clicking over now!

Yeah, the books are very much "fair for their time" in that sense. Yes, there's gay men, but the way their represented is pretty uninformed. The idea that anal sex makes you gay, case in point.

Thanks so much, your concrit was very helpful.
