People are totally weird about ADHD. I don't *sleep* if I don't take Ritalin, which kind of invalidates the whole "omg you're on speed" thing.
It is true that for me large quantities of refined sugar and HFCS make things worse, but I still need Ritalin even if I don't eat any, and it's impossible to avoid entirely, and people just have their heads up their asses...

Heh. I don't need my Dexedrine to sleep, but I certainly CAN sleep with it in my system. Do it all the time.
And I'm willing to believe that cutting refined sugar from my diet might help my ADHD. I'm just not willing to do it. Particularly not simply to avoid meds. That's a big pain-in-the-ass lifestyle switch with an uncertain probability of working verses a sure thing in a few pills a day - and barely any side effects.
Psychostimulant medications have, hands down, the most undeserved reputation when it comes to efficacy vs. safety. IMO.
