Well, there are the submarine races; human powered, yet.

I'd think a better ski lift replacement would be, say, a human cannonball type system; the location of the two endpoints are essentially fixed after all.

I think Donkey Kong installed one of those on his snowboard cross slope.

I think my favorite bit was the offhand reference in the article to a ski resort owner wanting to get permission to use an atomic bomb to "retailor" the landscape of Vermont for a new resort.
