Have you thought about going another route? For example, John and the city are all geared up for Caldwell to hate John and to shamelessly use this as an excuse to get John's job. Rodney's got a list on his laptop (complete with powerpoint presentations and visuals) about why John deserves to keep his job. THerefore, nobody tells Caldwell about John!cat. Then Caldwell comes, and he all "Oh look a kitty [scritch kitty behind ear]"

Just a thought, got it from reading another story about cats.
