DONGHAE
“This is completely unacceptable behavior from both of you,” the principal said, glaring at them. “I have no question on who started it.”
Donghae smirked.
“But Hyukjae, you should know better than to let him irritate you. I expect more from you than this.”
Donghae scoffed, because of course, the principal didn’t expect more from him. He was a lost cause already. Eunhyuk apologized and bowed and left. Donghae stood and waited for the principal to say something else.
“You’re in your last year, Donghae. You have enough credits and a high enough score to graduate. Don’t fuck it up for yourself, or for anyone else anymore. Just let the students succeed in peace.”
Donghae glared at the spot just behind the principal, screaming mental “fuck you’s” at the man.
“Look, Donghae, I know you’re having a hard time dealing with your father’s death, but-”
Donghae didn’t care if it was rude; he turned around and walked out. He did not go back to class. He thought for a moment of texting Yoochun to see where he was, and decided he didn’t want to be around anyone else. He left the school, and lit a smoke as soon as he was out the door. He walked around the building, kicking rocks, while heavy Japanese rock music played in his headphones.
No one had the right to tell him that he was having a hard time dealing with his dad’s death. None of them knew, or could ever understand. None of them. Donghae’s dad was his best friend, his only support. Yes, he loved his mother, and she … well, she did her best, but she had to work so much, Donghae rarely saw her. It was better if he didn’t bother her with school problems.
Movement from the corner of his eye made him glance up.
Eunhyuk, running sprints over the soccer field. Looks like Mr. Perfect didn’t care to finish class either. Not that Donghae blamed him. The look on his face when he’d realized Donghae had cut off a section of his hair was priceless. Kid was too perfect anyway. Donghae jumped up to a fire escape and climbed up to the roof.
He smoked his cigarette, watching Eunhyuk go through soccer drills by himself. The bell rang, and little by little, more of the soccer players joined him. He picked out Junsu just by the kid’s ass. His phone beeped.
Yoochun where are you
Donghae the roof
A few minutes later, Yoochun climbed up the fire escape. He stole Donghae’s cigarette and took a few drags while they watched soccer practice.
Eunhyuk slammed into the goalie and fell to the ground. Donghae laughed.
Yoochun smiled. “I heard you cut his hair off.”
“One of my more genius moments.”
“Why?”
Donghae shrugged. “I sat behind him in English, and stared at his stupid, perfect head and decided to make it not so perfect.”
“Junsu is going to kick your ass.”
“Whatever.”
“It was sort of juvenile,” Yoochun said. He gave Donghae a knowing look. “Sort of like pulling on a girl’s ponytail when you like them. When you’re eight years old. How old are you?”
“Fuck off. I don’t like Eunhyuk.”
“Rumors are that you got right in his face, bodies touching and everything. I heard one girl saying it was like you two were about to kiss each other.”
Donghae looked away. Eunhyuk’s body heat had been amazing. The anger on his skin and in his face. The teacher had pulled him away so fast, but Donghae had felt it. And now that he thought about it, he didn’t like it. Or did he?
“You’re coming to the game with me tonight,” Yoochun said.
“What? Fuck you. No, I’m not.”
“Why not? You don’t seem to mind watching them practice.”
“Whatever. Why the hell do you want to go?”
“Um, Junsu’s ass?”
“Right.”
Yoochun turned around and leaned against the concrete. “You have a reason to go anyway.”
“What’s that?”
“Taemin.”
“Who?”
“The new kid. Taemin. He’s a first year, and on the first year soccer squad. So he’ll be there. He won’t be on the field, but he’ll be there, and in his soccer uniform. Figure it’s a good time for you to start making an impression on him.”
“All I have to do is get him into a bathroom alone to make an impression on him.”
“You’re such a slut.”
“Then what does that make you?”
Yoochun smiled. “Easy.”
Donghae rolled his eyes. “I’m not going.”
-----
A few hours later, Donghae followed Yoochun through the crowds of people gathered for the soccer game. He told himself over and over again that he was only there to flirt with Taemin, but a little tiny part of him wanted to see Eunhyuk.
Whispers followed them, because Yoochun and Donghae did not do school spirit or school support, or anything. Donghae heard a few people mention that Eunhyuk had to shave his head because Donghae had ruined his perfect hair. Donghae hoped so, but knew that he hadn’t cut that much off.
“There’s your boytoy,” Yoochun said and nudged him.
Donghae looked over and saw Taemin (god, he was tall) with a few other first year soccer kids.
“You should just go over and kiss him,” Yoochun said.
“Yeah, right.”
Almost as if Taemin knew he was being observed, he looked up and met Donghae’s eyes. He blushed and looked away almost immediately, but he was smiling.
“See?” Donghae said. “I don’t even have to fucking try with this one.”
“So, go talk to him.”
“No. I don’t need to. He’ll find me soon enough.”
Taemin looked up one more time, and Donghae made sure that he smiled at the kid. Yoochun made Donghae buy a hot dog, and then they made their way up to the very top of the bleachers. They received more looks and more whispers, but Donghae didn’t care. As soon as they were seated at the top, Donghae put his headphones on. He scanned the crowd and found Taemin with his friends near the front. The sun set behind them, throwing colors onto the field. The lights were bright, and the crowd cheered as the soccer team was introduced.
Donghae pulled his eyes away from Taemin and watched Eunhyuk play. He smiled when he saw that
Eunhyuk’s hair was shorter. It looked good on him.
The game was boring. Donghae liked soccer, but their team was so much better than the other, that by halftime, it was already three to nothing. Eunhyuk had scored twice, and Junsu once.
Donghae spent the second half of the game half-watching Eunhyuk and half-watching Taemin. About ten minutes in, Taemin stood up. Donghae looked at Yoochun. Yoochun leered at him.
Donghae stood up and hurried down the bleachers, not caring when he ran into other people. He kept his eyes on Taemin, and when he disappeared around the bleachers, Donghae knew he was going to the restroom.
Perfect.
Donghae went there, and leaned against the wall, waiting. He pulled his headphones off.
When the door opened and Taemin exited, Donghae said, “Hey.”
Taemin stopped, looked at him and then down at the ground. He said nothing.
Donghae pushed off the wall and moved toward him. “You’re Taemin, right?”
He nodded.
“I’m Donghae.”
“I know. Everyone says to stay away from you.”
Donghae chuckled and touched Taemin’s shoulder. Kid was really tall, a few centimeters taller than Donghae was. “Oh really? And what do you say?”
“I … I think …”
Donghae tugged on his arm, and Taemin let himself be led around the corner of the bleachers. Donghae slammed Taemin up against the wall and let his lips just barely graze Taemin’s. The kid was shaking.
The crowd suddenly cheered. Another goal, and the announcer said Eunhyuk’s name. Taemin’s was the second body he had pinned to a wall that day, but not the one that he wanted. Donghae cursed himself and, trying to get rid of that thought, settled his hands on Taemin’s waist.
“I think you’re gorgeous,” Donghae continued. “And I think I want to see you on your knees. When you figure out what you think, let me know.”
Donghae released him and left him there, walking back around the bleachers and up to his seat.
Yoochun smirked at him. “Well?”
“The idea has been planted in his head.”
They both watched as Taemin went back to his seat. He shot a look up to them, blushed and then hastily sat down.
“God, he’s cute,” Yoochun said. “Let me know when you’re done with him.”
“Yeah, okay.” Donghae turned his attention back to the game (or if he was honest with himself, back to Eunhyuk).
“The haircut looks good on him,” Yoochun muttered.
Donghae scowled, because the haircut looked really good on him, but the sweaty, gasping, dishelved-ness of him looked even better. God, he hated Eunhyuk some days.
