Big News from WotC

WotC made the official announcement today that what everyone thought was going on is going on and will begin play testing soon - 5th edition D&D. This is pretty huge news in the role-playing game industry and has even made it out to the New York Times. How much of that do you think really is "we've lost market share" as opposed to the "we need to pump new things in the market to keep sales cycle"? I got the feeling with 3.5 and then the 4e releases that they had more to do with a perpetual sales market idea than the necessity for an actual new version.

I don't think it's just the sales cycle. They've been working on ways to even that out already with 4e and the online subscription to the tools. That should generate a nice steady flow of a half million a month. Plus, they already had the push for the mid-cycle revenue boost last year with Essentials. If they're already announcing work and play testing on a new edition, there's something bigger going on. I really think they're try to find a way to stop Paizo from eating their lunch by working on a more unifying D&D.
