What part of it? The crime itself or the immediate backlash of popular opinion as to what age constitutes "legal responsibility"?
I'm curious, then, do 14 year olds get to participate in politics (vote, run for office), drink, have sex, drive cars, move out of their houses, get jobs, and other adults responsibilities in Japan as well? Maybe they do. I don't know a lot about Japanese civics.
We either believe kids are responsible for their actions or we don't. I never understood the "exceptions" based on our guttural reactions to the shock-factor of the crime. Shit happens. People do random bad things for reasons of their own. Some girl goes insane and stabs a classmate...do I think the fabric of Japanese society is crumbling? Not based on that incident. It's a tragedy for the families involved, but is it a social problem? I'm not sure. I'd need other evidence.
It's the whole apocalypse thing. I read something like that and am somewhat happy that such senseless killing happens. It might be a defense mechanism. I can't deal with a little girl slicing another little girl and letting her bleed to death, so I just think, "There goes the world. Good."
yeah, I can relate to that. I think, "hmmm. a little girl slicing another little girl and letting her bleed to death may indeed be one of the signs; the End Times are nigh." Or, I think, "ship happens." I can go either way. I'm noncommittal like that. ;p
