Smith & Jones +I love this episode. I think this is one of the strongest season openings of Doctor Who so far (although “Partners in Crime” is a very strong 2nd). Acting, plot, pacing everything was great ( Martha, Galactic Doctor )
The one-trip nonsense, more than anything else, pissed me off immensely. Martha didn't deserve that - no one else, however, unwelcome they were, had to put up with that crap. Geez, even Mickey got a proper invite from Nine, back in World War Three
( ... )
Preach girl. I thought that that was complete bull as she was the first and only so far to have that pulled on her in the history of Doctor Who. Not only that, but that that nonsense Continued on for like 3 more episodes in? No that really pisses me off and then I start asking questions.
Yep Rose got invited on, Donna practically begged to stay (none of that, you're replacing her nonsense), but poor Martha was constantly reminded how less she was in comparison to Rose by the writers, fandom, and the Doctor...ugh my love/hate relationship continues
Actually it continued for SIX episodes - nearly half the damned season! She only got a proper invitation to stay at the end of The Lazarus Experiment...
Re: One Trip nonsense I wish I would have gotten the hint that the entire season was going to be nothing more than Ten being a dick head throwing a gazillion mixed signals so I could have quit watching right then. I did quit watching when Rose showed up in Donna's first episode though. Fool me one and all that jazz.
Truefax! There was no need for him to be that cold to her. The few times he did show that he cared, like in Gridlock and 42 (the ones least liked by fans ironically) it was immediately glossed over and Ten went back to his ass-hole like ways, so as not to upset the precious Rose-shippers. ugh my head hurts :\ Thanks for commenting

It has been all been said and well. Lovely introduction to the character, steamy flirtation, good chemistry, then WTF!!??Girl (to Martha) run don't walk for the door. If this was a 'actual' date, how many of us were already closing the freaking door in this jerk's face? HE invites HER to join him as a 'thank you', then starts getting in her face about how much he'd rather be alone and really rather not take her anywhere, but since he HAS to it's just going to be one trip?! By the way bcbgrl33, thank you for such a great discussion and fourm! Please accept my invitation!

Your welcome girl I just friended you. Thanks for adding to this wonderful discussion. I just felt I had to let out my frustrations and sent the invite for others to rant and discuss with me. Thanks for commenting :D
Rusty achieved the impossible - he made me dislike Ten at the end of this season and if there is one thing I adore it's Ten. Martha (and Freema if you ask me) was so badly used. I can partially understand the Doctor being a bit gunshy, but if he gives such mixed messages from the beginning, what did he expect? 'Do you want to go out?' in the hospital, the absolute 'come hither' look he gives her from the alley - heck if he looked at me like that I might think he had a passing interest. I know he really is a bit stupid when it comes to human hearts, but he was cruelly oblivious to Martha and that is just not nice.
Rusty, you f'd up what could have been one of the best companions ever. That's pretty hard to forgive.
That is why I am soooo glad Rusty is gone and we have Moffat although I am wary of the whole Doctor/River Song as I'm afraid he will pull a Rusty and force them as OTP and consequently hurt companions; but, I'll reserve judgement. Martha was incredibly mistreated by the writers and Ten. I think people have come around to realizing what a great companion she was and how much of an A-hole Ten became. Thanks for commenting
Ten was so flirty in this episode, he should have been wearing a "On the Rebound" T-shirt. I mean, that look that he gave her in the street after the family bust up? TALK ABOUT A COME ON! My personal theory is that he was really interested in Martha but then he realised it and got scared about how much he liked her, hence the hot and cold. I agree that Martha was badly treated both by Ten and most of the writers.
Also, we knew Martha was going to be the S3 companion, what was this whole 'one trip' shit?
That "One Trip" BS is exactly my issues with this whole season.
<"He realized it and got scared about how much he liked her, hence the hot and cold">
I agree with this however, my personal theory (which keeps me from burning things ;D) is that his original wife on Gallifrey was Black. She was a Black woman he loved and lost and that's why he can't look at Martha without engendering the pain and that's why he is cold and keeping her at a distance. That's my cannon and it keeps me from burning things :D
The whole one trip thing really pissed me off big time. She was far more capable in her first encounter with him than most companions (if not all) have ever been and yet she gets an invite with a caveat. so incredibly annoying.
Seriously she didn't panic, was assertive, and helped save his life with Her last breath. And all he says is "one trip, kthnxbye" It's like "Really?" Maybe the first time I could get with, but the incessant reminding and Rose mentions were incredibly grating.

(This is why "Reset" is a wonderful, wonderful thing. Martha is all kinds of awesome in that episode and Jack fangirls her the ENTIRE TIME. *lol*)
