We (Plymouth Marine Laboratory staff) have just sat through an astonishing seminar, given by Dave. Dave is the fittest 82 year old that I have ever clapped eyes on. He is an ex-police diver, but not an ex-diver; he still dives a couple of times a week, throughout the year. Gah - patronising people are so very annoying. I remember a similar experience when I went on a church retreat, and the speaker was a older guy who had started lots of churches and done all kinds of good things, and what he had to say was actually really good and spot on - but again, he said it in such a patronising way that ... well, it actually didn't alienate most people, because lots of church people are like that and so most people in my church thought his supercilious air was proof of how great he was, but it alienated me, anyway!

Some of it was quite funny. He was making comments along the lines of,

"And how many of you have actually put on a face mask and looked underwater? Very simple invention, the face mask, and yet how many of you have actually bothered to put one on and take a look?"

The Director gently (obviously a man with greater patience than my own) pointed out that there was a good chance that the majority of his audience were divers (which was true).

Meanwhile, I physically had to sit on my hands to refrain from pointing out that I have actually (in my youth) dived the specific area that he was talking about many times.

Ah well.
