Summary: Seven years after they've graduated Noah Puckerman and Rachel Berry are living completely separate lives-Noah as a musician in NYC, and Rachel as an actress in L.A, both struggling with the "whys' and the "hows" of their breakup two years before that caused Puck to move to NYC. Then Puck gets a call from Jon Stewart (yes that Jon Stewart) that will change everything.
I hate New York, Puck thought as he woke up with perhaps one the worst hangovers he'd had in quite a few years. He started to get up but was hit with one of those headaches that only came with consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, and he slumped back down his bed. Lying on the couch he tried to remember just why he had the hangover from hell. A groan came from the direction of the couch, and a Kurt sounding voice reached him "that is the last time I let Blake convince me that cranberry martinis are good for my kidneys, because they are so not good for my liver".
Puck tried to formulate the words that would lead to questions, that would hopefully lead to answers about why they were there, instead he said "where's Blake" and with a groan "what did I drink?" Kurt, it seemed, despite the cranberry martinis from hell, was more with it than he was "God, what didn't you drink last night Noah? Blake left at a reasonable hour as he had some sort of press thing to do.” Apparently Blake was smarter than Puck had given hime credit for, because he should’ve gone home two jack and cokes before he actually did, and God did his head hurt. "Advil, coffee, water". He managed to get up, head pounding, looked around, thanking Blake, or whoever it was, that managed to get him back to his own place because at least he knew where the Advil, coffee, and water were/.
About two coffees, four Advil, and a liter of water later, Puck was feeling much more like a human being, and had decided that the next order of business was greasy breakfast food. Of course, that is when Kurt decided to get up and join him in the kitchen. "Make me up some eggs will you, sunny side up, thanks", says Kurt as he moves past Puck to grab some coffee. Pucks' still too tired to argue, and besides, he wants to get Kurt talking, so he can explain Puck's hangover.. He quickly cooked up a couple of eggs, dishes them up on a plate, before handing it to Kurt. "So" Puck began "care to explain what happened last night?" Kurt gave him one of those looks Puck was sure he mastered back in high school, the 'why are you such a moron' look. "I should think, Noah, that is pretty obvious, and you are being purposely vague right now, which I really don't have the brain capacity to handle right now, so either stop it, or figure it out yourself". Puck thought that's rather unfair. "Dude, I just made you breakfast, and you know I don't ask questions I don't know the answers to, now tell me". "Ok", said Kurt, "let me explain this in small words that your less intelligent, booze soaked brain can understand, Jon Stewart, Rachel, and a lot of alcohol".
Damn it, Puck thought as his headache came back bringing with it vivid memories of last nights' escapades, and he slumped in his chair. Kurt looked at him, his expression changing from one of exasperation to pity. Puck wished for the exasperation, he wanted no one's pity, least of all from the guy who he used to toss in dumpster. Thankfully, Kurt said nothing, instead opting to finish his eggs and coffee before scuttling off to 'murder Blake in front of a bunch of people', which Puck knew he really didn’t mean. Just as he was about to close the door, he turned around, pausing briefly, "at the risk of sounding more gay than usual, and I know you probably won't take me up on this offer, but if you want to talk about it, you know after I kill Blake, give me a call".
-Kurt was right, Puck had no intention of talking to him, or anyone really about last night. He checked his phone, and saw he had a voice mail from Rachel. He knew he was going to regret listening to this message, but he did anyway.
Noah…..this is Rachel. I'm leaving today, which I was planning on doing anyways. So umm yeah, last night, Noah I don't even know what to say, or how to process what happened. I guess I didn't realize that you still felt that way. I guess (there is a significant pause, and Puck wonders if she's hung up), well I guess we are going to have to talk about this sometime. I'd like to think we are both rational human beings, when one of us isn't completely intoxicated, maybe we can come to some sort of arrangement. (another short pause) I'd really like us to be friends again Noah.
"Friends" thought Noah, yeah, that's what I want to be Rachel. You broke my fucking heart, and you want to be friends. These types of thoughts, however, were the types of thoughts that had led to last nights' regretful actions. He now remembered way more than he really cared to. Interviewing and performing on 'The Late Show', going out to drink with Mercedes and Mitchell and Kurt and Blake, and Rachel. He wishes he had someone to blame for his drunkenness, because he knew that while Rachel was the reason he drank so much, he had only himself to blame. He collapsed on the couch as the memories came flooding back.
Although he'd gradually become more popular on the music scene, Puck's first moment of "wow, I've really made it", was when his agent informed him, because he had that sort of relationship where she scheduled things and he didn’t argue, that he was going to be appearing on 'The Late Show with Jon Stewart'. "Jon Stewart", he thought, "damn, I should call Rachel", and then he remembered he couldn’t, or rather, he shouldn't.
It was Rachel that first introduced him to Jon Stewart, via The Daily Show, back when they had first gotten together in their senior year at McKinley. Rachel found Puck's lack of knowledge or interest in politics very frustrating. "But No-ah, how can you be so nonchalant about what is going on in the world? Puck shrugs he's a high school guy, following politics at his age is usually frowned upon, but Rachel keeps at him until he agrees to watch one episode of 'The Daily Show'. Puck, although he is loathe to admit it to Rachel, he actually enjoys the show, and secretly watches it online, still feigning ignorance when she brings something political up.
Yet another thing associated with Rachel, Puck thought, after hanging up with his agent. Enough of this dwelling on the past bullshit, he was going to call Kurt. He knew Kurt was going to flip out when he found out about Jon Stewart, as Kurt was quite possibly one of his biggest fans. Also, Kurt was one of Puck's closest friends in New York.Which, yeah, was a bit ironic considering how they were anything but in high school- even after he began dating Rachel.
Truth is after the whole baby drama with Quinn, he and Finn were never quite as close, even though Quinn gave the baby up for adoption and things pretty much returned to normal. He didn’t blame Finn, and frankly, it made moving out to L.A a bit easier, knowing he wasn't leaving his best friend back in Ohio. He still talked to Finn occasionally, through email and stuff, checking in.
When he moved out to New York, he actually lived with Artie for a while, until he got up on his feet. Artie was a cool guy and all, they got along professionally, but neither of them were into having lengthy talks (unless it was about music), or about sharing, umm, emotions. Kurt, however, was a completely different story. Kurt barreled into Puck's life in a way that brokered no disagreement. Puck found it odd that Kurt was so welcoming to him in those first few weeks, considering all the shit that Puck had done to him in high school, but he actually enjoyed hanging out with Kurt so he didn't bother to ask. Between Kurt and Mercedes, Puck found that he didn't have to do a lot of talking those first few weeks in New York, which was great as he was definitely not in a sharing mood.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you looked at it, Kurt began asking questions about why he and Rachel broke up, and what he planned to do in New York. Puck really didn't want to talk about the former, so he talked about the latter. Somehow, Kurt had been able to read between the lines of those conversations and figure out the how and why of his breakup with Rachel. He tried to bring it up a couple of times, thinking that just maybe Puck would get Rachel out of his system if he talked about it, but he didn't want to talk about it, and he's wasn't in any hurry to get Rachel out of his system. If it weren't for her he wouldn't have a song on the radio. Since he didn't talk about Rachel, Kurt had to find other topics to discuss with Puck, which is how Puck found out about Kurt's love for Jon Stewart.
This is why Kurt was the first person he told about Jon Stewart.
"Hey Kurt, its Noah. How's it going?"
"Hey Noah. Blake's in town, so pretty good. What's new?"
"Well, you know how Chasing Cars has been getting all sorts of airplay lately?"
"Yes, of course. You know I like to keep tabs on my friends' successes."
"Well, apparently so has Jon Stewart, because I'm going be on 'The Late Show' in a month", a smile creeps into Puck's voice, Kurt can hear it through the telephone lines, "and I thought I'd call you and make you jealous."
"Well congratulations, I'm incredibly jealous, but you know what this means? A post performance party! Oh, I'm going to have to start planning stat. Why couldn't you have told me sooner, so much planning to do… Hmm, or maybe we can go bar hopping, and of course we have to go to Artie's place too. I think Blake will be in town again, so maybe he can pull some strings, but I'll have to ask, and of course Mercedes is going to have to come, and Mitchell."
"Ok, Kurt", Puck laughed, "slow down, I don't know about all of that, but hanging out with you guys sounds good."
"So…" Kurt paused "you'll be performing then, singing Chasing Cars?"
"Yeah, Kurt. That's what's on the radio, so that's what I'm playing."
"Will there be an interview portion? Or are you just singing?"
"Well according to my agent, who directs my life-tell Blake thanks for that recommendation by the way- I'm coming on second, and then also performing."
"So, will you go over questions, or rather will Stephanie, before the show, and approve certain things? I mean I'm only assuming from what Blake has told me."
"Yeah, I guess that's what she'll do. I probably won't have much say in it. I mean I trust her, so whatever she decides is fine by me. Why do you ask?" Puck was starting to get suspicious; usually, when Kurt started asking lots of specific questions he was up to no good.
" No reason." Kurt said brightly. "I'm just curious. Do you think we can get tickets? I think just for Mercedes and myself. It might be a bit too much if Blake and Mitchell come, they might draw too much attention."
"Ok then." Puck was sure that Kurt was up to something, but it was pointless to ask. Kurt was going to do what he was going to do. Anyway, he was the guy that didn’t ask questions. "Yeah, I'm sure it'll be no problem to get you two in, it'll be good to know I've got friends in the audience. I'll make sure Stephanie gets four tickets, though, just in case. Speaking of which, it looks like she's on the other line, I'd better go. Talk you later."
Kurt flipped his phone closed and turned to find Blake watching him suspiciously.
"What, you too? Why does everyone think I'm up to something?"
"That's because you are Kurt. It has something to do with Noah and Rachel doesn't it?"
"Maybe, and I'm only telling you this because I have a favor to ask. "
"And what do I get out of this favor babe, and don't say sex because that's too easy."
Kurt rolled his eyes "Oh yes, I am a slut-giving it up easy-but in all seriousness let me tell you my plan and then you can name your price, if you will."
"Alright, let's hear your devious plan"
"So, Noah's going to be on 'The Late Show with Jon Stewart', which-shut up yes I am definitely going" Kurt cuts him off, as Blake smirked, knowing full well the extent of Kurt's fanboyish love for Jon Stewart. "Anyways, so since you know Stephanie, and Stephanie basically runs Noah's life, you - I mean me of course - can send some specific questions Stephanie's way, about what he did in high school-what he was like-what he did; which will of course lead to glee club and Rachel."
"Ok, I suppose that's not too farfetched, and I know Stephanie will probably go along with it without too much persuasion. We both know that she likes anything that creates publicity for the people she represents, and Noah's connection to Rachel would be a rather perfect opportunity for publicity exploitation in her eyes, although I doubt he'll see it that way." Blake again looked at Kurt suspiciously. "But that's not all is it?"
Kurt knew that Blake was on to him - damn it why did he have to be gorgeous, talented, and so smart - he was like some glittery Sherlock Holmes always reading between the lines.
"Well…..I was thinking that if we can get Jon to ask him about his high school days - a high school clip from his glee club days would be appropriate, as long as Noah didn't know about it beforehand. See, I have this video of our "best hits" that Mr. Shue gave to all us when we graduated-which Artie then converted to a digital file - anyways it includes the video of Noah singing 'Sweet Caroline' to Rachel. I was thinking that I'd send that video to 'The Late Show', and let him run with it."
"Oh man" Blake laughed long and hard, falling on his bed in a sudden fit of laughter. Finally he recovered enough to wheeze out-"babe, that is one of the the most, well actually the most convoluted schemes I've ever heard. You know, it might actually work, that is if Noah doesn't kill you after he finds out that you planted the video - which he will of course. I'm pretty sure I can convince Steph to go along with this….I'm assuming that you're planning on inviting Rachel in my place, right?"
"If you mean give Rachel your ticket after somehow convincing her to come out to NYC to see the show, then yes, that is my plan. You'll draw too much attention, and if Mercedes goes - which she'd better - then that's two very famous people at a random taping, so its' really better this way."
Blake had fully recovered from his laughing attack and had made his way over to where Kurt was sitting - he sunk down next to Kurt on the couch and looped his arm around his shoulder and planted a kiss on Kurt's cheek-"considering some of the plans I've heard you and Mercedes hatch, this is one I could actually get behind. I mean I'm sure it'll still end in disaster, but I love it…..so about that sex."
Kurt laughed, as Blake swept him off the couch and carried him to bed - devouring him first with eyes and then his mouth - all thoughts of scheming temporarily put aside for far more critical matters.
Blake returned to L.A for a release party the next day -he invited Kurt to come with him, but Kurt wasn’t sure he was quite ready for all of the hoopla that would surround Blake, and whoever Blake was with. It wasn’t like they'd been discreet when Blake had visited, but they hadn’t exactly advertised it either - he hadn’t gone to any premieres, awards shows, or benefits with Blake, even though he probably could have. Although he was relatively happy now, his relationship, or whatever it was he had, with Blake was complicated. He'still wasn’t really sure where he stood with him. He thought that Blake was probably pretty fond of him, but wasn’t entirely sure if Blake liked him enough to really ditch that gay playboy image that had worked so well for him in his post American Idol days.
Kurt didn’t want to go to any of the previous events Blake had invited him to - not wanting to be seen as just another one of his pretty boy toys that he usually took to these things and then ditched a week later. Call him a romantic, but if or when Kurt wentto an L.A event with Blake he wanted to feel special. He didn’t want to be a pretty accessory. This time, however, it seemed different when Blake asked-this time he seemed genuinely disappointed that Kurt couldn't, or wouldn't go-usually he just shrugged off Kurt's refusals, and tried to make him jealous by describing the pretty boy who would be taking Kurt's place.
Just as he was starting to imagine what this week's pretty boy would look like, Blake didn't say, his cell phone rang (Defying Gravity of course). It was Mercedes - oh shit that's right he was supposed to meet her for lunch today - apparently she hadsomething big to discuss. Kurt picked up the phone, knowing he was about to get bitched at.
"Hi Mercedes, and before you start, I know I'm late. I'll grab a cab and be there as soon as I can."
"Save your apologies Kurt, I know Blake is in town, and you were", Mercedes paused, and Kurt could almost hear the smirk in her voice, "otherwise occupied. I was just calling to tell you that my meeting with the record execs ran a bit late, and I was thinking maybe we could just chill at my place, order something, and talk."
"Sounds like a plan sweetie pie (he's called her sweetie pie since they moved out to New York. He doesn’t remember how it started, but somehow it fits). Now I can take the subway, since it's quicker, instead of a cab - ugh you know how I detest those things. I should be there in about a half an hour."
"Oh whatever sweet thang (this nickname started about the same time as sweetie pie, and is the result of Kurt's propensity for syrupy sweet coffee and alcoholic beverages), see you when you get here. Oh and I know we have very important boyfriend things to discuss, but we also have plotting and scheming to do as well."
Mercedes laughed, "Is this about Noah going on 'The Late Show'? This should be interesting. He called me this morning to tell me-he seemed rather surprised that you hadn't told me yet."
Kurt was slightly disappointed that he didn’t get to share this exciting news with Mercedes, but on the other hand it did leave more time for scheming. "Well, as you so succulently put it earlier, I was occupied. Ok, I'm going to get going, see you soon."
"Kurt, I don't know. It sounds like a big mess. I mean how are you even going to coax Rachel to come out to New York?" Mercedes frowned. "I don't know all that went down with Noah and Rachel. I only know Rachel's side of the story - the parts she has been willing to share. They haven't seen each other in what, over a year? And I do not want to be around for that drama, because as sure as your boyfriend won American Idol and I did not, there is going to be drama, and probably tears. I love a good drama, but usually it's usually on a movie screen."
"Ok, first off Blake isn't my boyfriend, and secondly it's so going to work....eventually, I just need you to help me map out the details. By the way, my not-boyfriend thinks it could work."
Mercedes face fell-forming into an expression that Kurt knew was reserved for his "not relationship" with Kurt. "You know at some point I'd like to discuss this, what is that you call, your "not relationship" with Blake, but we obviously need to talk about this scheme of yours, and my actual relationship, with my actual boyfriend. So, as you've said getting Stephanie to "ok" the questions seems pretty easy - well done on that one, but getting Rachel to New York, that's going to be difficult. I think, since I've kept in touch with her more so than you, and shut up you know she's still secretly jealous that you are on Broadway and she's not, that I might be able to work some of my diva magic to convince her to come out here." Mercedes pauses; "I suppose I just need to call her first, see how she's doing, and then maybe work in this scheme gradually.? Maybe, maybe you could make up something about a new show that you're in, that she simply must come to check out, opening night and all. Maybe I can suggest that some big names, excluding Noah of course, will be there. Or I can suggest that some Hollywood producer is out here looking to turn your musical into a movie, and that you have the inside scoop? Help me out here Kurt, I'm throwing things out here - it's your idea, what do you think? I really wish I knew where Noah and Rachel stood though, and I know I won't be able to get anything out of him. Do you think you could find out? I suppose I could call Rachel and ask her, but that will be awkward."
"Well…now don't bust my windows or anything, but I do actually know that he and Rachel are on speaking terms. Although I'm not really clear on what 'speaking terms' means to Noah. I sorta, mighta, kinda, asked him about that after we all first heard Chasing Cars. I just never mentioned it. He asked me not to because he didn't want to make a big deal about it. And yes, I am quite aware of the irony of him telling me this, but see this proves that I can keep a secret."
"For some reason, you are the only one he talks to about Rachel. I still don't understand how the hell you guys become such… "bffs", or why. I'm not really jealous", Kurt rolls his eyes, "shut your mouth, it just still surprises me."
"Yeah Mercedes, Noah is kind of intimidated by you-always has been. Which I think you should take as a compliment. And also, why wouldn't I befriend Noah? It's not like he's tried to throw me in any dumpsters since he moved out to New York-my point being that he's not the same person he was in high school. Besides, you remember how he looked when he first moved out here? He looked like a puppy that had just been kicked; you know my weakness for puppies and broken hearts."
Mercedes mutters "yeah, especially when it's yours that's getting broken."
"I will choose to ignore that last sentence. We will write, direct, and produce a love story; one that resembles a Nicholas Sparks story, but still it'll be one for the ages."
"Kurt, you are such a hopeless romantic, but that's one of the reasons I love you. I will give Rachel a call this week-I'll figure out something to say that isn't completely awkward, and you can get Blake to contact Stephanie and send that video to 'The Late Show', and well go from there. Now lets get to the whole reason I invited you over, my love life, with my actual boyfriend."
"Yes, so what's up with Mitchell these days? I haven't seen him in ages. Is he still in the recording studio? I feel like I haven't seen either of you in weeks. Does he still have all those Beyonce wannabes hanging all over him?"
"Yeah, sorry about that, we've both been in the studio a lot lately. I've been having a lot of fights with my record company, because I want to go in a different direction-make it more Beyonce R&B and less Jordan Sparks pop. It's really been slowing down everything, and it's really frustrating. I guess I need to diva out, or something."
"Well you know I approve of being a fierce diva, especially if it means you get to have more creative input in the music that you make. I want the best for you of course sweetie pie, but what is going on with Mitchell though?"
"I think the problem is that I don't know what's really up with him. We see each other about once a week these days, but whenever I see him he's been reserved, and distant. I'm about to go over to the studio, and see if he's found himself a Beyonce, but I don't want to be "that girl", you know."
"Ok, stop right there, why do you assume he's cheating on you? You guys have been together for well over year, he's never given you a reason to suspect that he's cheating, and he obviously loves you."
"You know Kurt, it's ironic just how knowledgeable you are about other people's relationships, but you can't seem to figure out your own. I know Mitchell's never given me a reason to suspect him, but now that he's got all these skinny and talented backup singers, who all adore him- I just wonder if he's starting to think about trading up. It also doesn't help that he's been so distant in the last couple of weeks."
"Ok,Beyonce, itchell has no intention of dumping you for some skinny ho. Mitchell would have to be crazy to break up with you girl. Tell you what, lets the three, or maybe four or five -depending on whether or not I can get Noah and Artie to come out - of us have a night out on the town, and you can remind him of how very fabulous you are. No argument, it's happening."
Mercedes glanced at her blinking Blackberry, and remembered that she had a meeting with her record execs in about an hour.
Mercedes laughed, "lord how do you always know how to cheer me up? I've really got to get going though - meeting with the record execs in about an hour. Wish me luck?"
"Sure sweetie, I've got rehearsal in a few hours anyways. If those sharks give you any trouble just be that fierce diva I know you can be….Oh and Mercedes, don't forget you are ten times more amazing then any of those backup singers Mitchell has working with him."
After Kurt left, Mercedes started to think over their conversation. Kurt wouldn’t admit it, but for all their talk about Noah's inability to share his feelings, Kurt was just as bad about actually talking to her when he was upset about something, or someone, that Blake had done. Kurt would totally deny it if she asked him, but she was sure that he was head over heels over Blake, and was too afraid to say anything because he didn't want to ruin Blake's playboy status.
As far as she was concerned, Kurt had always given away too much in his relationships, to make sure that the relationship worked out. Unfortunately this usually ended in heartbreak for Kurt. Blake was different though, somehow, she couldn't put her finger on it. It was something about the way they acted around each other. Granted she hadn't really hadn't been able to see them together all that often, as they didn't all go out together all that often - what with the paps constantly following either Blake or herself, it was a bit difficult to go anywhere these days. When she had the opportunity though, she watched. How could she not? Kurt was her best friend, and she had introduced the two of them, so in a way she felt invested in their "relationship". Kurt was a romantic at heart, so she knew he was frustrated by Blake's unwillingness to commit. The problem with Kurt was that, unless really pushed, he wouldn't ever say anything. Kurt was the "giver" in relationships, doing whatever it took to please people, which meant that people usually walked all over him, and eventually broke his heart. Blake, of course, was the playboy with the heart of gold, who cared for people deeply, but .really sucked at relationships.
When she had first introduced them, at the ‘American Idol’ finale, Kurt had been in a relationship so she didn’t worry about Kurt falling for Blake. They'd remained friends since then, sharing horror stories about record execs and fans, and bonding over just how crazy each of their lives had become. From time to time Blake would share crazy stories about his boy escapades, and she'd jokingly ask him when he was going to settle down - she wasn't always joking - and he'd tell her when she found him a suitable boyfriend, and she totally wasn't thinking about Kurt when he said that, really she wasn't. Blake was a good guy, but he was allergic to commitment, which meant he was an awful guy for her best friend.
Four hours later Mercedes was in a completely different mood. Her meeting had gone well, and she was able to successfully convince the execs that switching up her style - making it more R & B and less pop - was a good idea, financially speaking, and had run into Mitchell on her way out. Apparently the reason he had been so withdrawn, she asked because she was not about to be cheated on with some skinny ho and not know about it, was because he had been working on a song for her, and didn't want her to hear it until it was completed. She wasn't entirely convinced, but she let it go - making him promise to meet for drinks with Kurt and company soon. Leaving the studio, she remembered that she'd promised Kurt she would call Rachel. It was as good a time as any-best to do this while she was feeling good.
Rachel picked up on the third ring, "Mercedes, how are you? It's been a while. What's new? You know, that I haven't already found out from TMZ?"
"Things are good Rach. I finally convinced the record execs to let me go in a different direction with my next album. Sometimes being a diva pays off. So what's going on with you these days? How's John (Rachel's fiancé)?"
Rachel laughed, "and you guys always mocked me in high school - now you see just how useful being a diva can be sometimes. John's fine - I'm about to wrap up filming for a movie that'll probably be released sometime in the spring. I think we’re pretty much done, although you can never be sure. I might be called back in for some re-shoots in the next few weeks."
Mercedes paused for a moment, trying to figure out how to broach this subject, and just decided to hell with it.
"So the big news out here - at least Kurt's very excited, is that Noah's been invited to appear on Jon Stewart's show. Kurt and I are going to go the taping…."
"That is fantastic news ! Noah must be excited; I know how much he still loves Jon Stewart, but if I know you, you aren’t just calling to share this news."
"Well…..I was wondering what your schedule was like? If maybe you wanted to come out to New York, visit, and go to the show? I mean I don't really know where you and Noah are these days, or if you guys are on speaking terms? Would you feel comfortable being out here, or would it be inappropriate, or awkward? I just think that if you guys are really back to being friends, and if you can get away, he'd appreciate you being there."
"Yes, we are on speaking terms. I wouldn't go as far to say that we're friends - Noah has made it difficult for me to be friends with him since we broke up."
"Rachel that was over four years ago. You guys both need to get over yourselves. Just how has he made it so difficult to be friends? I think you just aren't trying hard enough."
Rachel's voice starts to get a little hysterical - Mercedes could tell that she was tired and emotionally frayed. "Oh yes of course, it's my fault. How many times do I have to tell you that our breakup was mutual?"
"I wasn't talking about the breakup. You have to work at friendships, just like other relationships. I'm not saying it's all your fault, so stop playing the blame game Rach. I'm just saying make an effort - maybe he will too. You do want to be friends again right?"
"Yes. I miss him…..as friend of course."
"Mhmm…right. Well then make the effort. Come out here, be supportive. We miss you too you know. Can you think of better way to get the old crew back together, than to support one of our own? Besides don't you love Jon Stewart?"
"I miss you guys too, all of you, and yes I do have a soft spot for Jon Stewart." Rachel paused significantly. "Ok, yes I'll look at my schedule, but I don't think it should be too much of a problem. It's in a month right?"
"Yes"
"Ok, but I'm making no promises. I don't know how Noah will react to me being there."
"The important thing is that you are there to support him, and hang out with us of course. Girl, this is going to be so much fun. I can't wait."
Mercedes could hear Rachel's smile through the phone, "I'm looking forward to it as well Mercedes. Can't wait to see you all."
Only after Rachel hung up did Mercedes realize she hadn’t asked if it was okay to bring John with her.
