Pneumonia, telecommuting, digital cameras, polls, and other misc. rambly things

Mar 01, 2006 07:13

So, I went back to the doctor on Monday, and she changed my drugs and sent me off for a chest X-ray (which she said she would confirm pneumonia, but she wanted to be on the safe side). She also suggested that I work 1/2 days this week if possible. All in all, I'm feeling very Jane Austen, lingering illness-ish about it, and I'm ready to get on with ( Read more... )

At the moment, I use a 7.2 megapixels Sony Cybershot and I am pleased with it so far (I had a Nikon before) - yay for pocket sized cameras that still can take good pics. :D I have a Canon EOS 500 film camera as well but now that I no longer have access to a photo lab, I can't really bother paying a fortune for processing.

Ok, poll:

A. Thousands of photos in a year. This is the beauty of digital!

B. Digital.

C. I'll share some of the best ones, but that really depends on the subject. I used to have some travel photos in albums online (not anymore, although that will change sometime soon). Mostly I just keep them in my HD and CDs.

D. I record them in CDs.

A couple of questions back at you: what are your favourite subjects? And the most challenging ones?

I had a feeling you were hardcore photo girl. :)

OK, my questions. I love people photography, both portraits and candids. I used to shoot almost exclusively black and white until I got a digital (my first was a Canon G3, which I loved), and then discovered the fun of Photoshop. I also love travel photography. I'm trying to get my real life webpage back up and running with some galleries - I love writing up photo essays of places that I've been.

I would say I think good landscapes are the most challenging. Well, and horses. I photographed a show for a friend (she was the show manager), and it was challenging to catch them looking nice (of course, that's not very creative, it was just for documentation purposes, but it was interesting).

I've also interested in trying more night photography - here's one I took in DC (actually, I'm pretty sure this is how I got the pneumonia). The highlights are blown out because I guessed at exposure and didn't have a tripod, but I'd like to try it again ( ... )

I'm glad you're feeling a little better. And I love your nosy polls. :-)

A: How many photos on average do you take a month (or a week, or in a year - whichever makes more sense to answer)?

Thousands, over the course of a year. Most are crap but picture-taking for me is a lot like golf for Chris. Just one good shot will keep me coming back. ;-)

B: Do you use a digital or a film camera?

Currently, I use a digital Nikon but I love cameras. Recently, I bought a Brownie and film for the Btownie and I can't wait to experiment with it. I also have a Kodak digital which is limited but perfect for all of us to use.

C: What do you do with your photos (share them with friends online, put them into albums, sell them, etc)?

Mostly I share them. Some I toos. Others I hide.

D: If you shoot digital, do you back up your photos, and if so, how?

I use my iPod as a backup and also CDs/DVDs. I'd like a better method though.

Thank you! And I toss LOADS too. I love that, actually - get rid of the bad ones so everyone thinks you're a genius. :)

A. Does your organization allow/promote/claim to promote but not really promote telecommuting ( ... )

Digital zoom sucks big time :p - I think camera makers should be barred from advertising that as a feature (and can I just repeat how stupid I was for not taking my film camera and zoom to Bradley Whitford's American talk?).

Also sucks that you're forbidden to telecommute. Bitches from me, too!

Glad you're starting to feel better! Please take it easy so your body has time to heal! :)

Thank you!

My company allows telecommuting and is very flexible about it. A number of my coworkers telecommute at least one day a week. And I've done it on days I've had inconvenient non-work appointments.

I, too, am in the market for a digital camera. I used to take more photos than I do now, but when I finally get a digital camera I'll probably go back to taking more than I do now.

If you're looking for reviews, I really like Ken Rockwell's - if you click on the Casio link you'll get to his page. He's sort of hated by a lot of online photographers (the ones who spend all their time testing their lenses to see which is the sharpest and none taking actual photos), so it makes me like him even more. :)
