disclaimer: I definatly do not own Robin Hood because I would never have agreed to that finale.

First Kiss

She hated the night. Especially this night, no matter which way she turned or what position she was in sleep would not come to her. And  In a way she was glad. The quicker she went to sleep, the quicker morning would come. Then she would marry Guy and become Gisborne. It wasn't fair. And with this though she threw off the heavy covers that held her down. She made as much noise as possible trying desperatly to wake someone. Someone who would sit with her and tell her everything would be fine. No one awoke, so she was left to her solitude. Off course now nobody would wake up she was quiet happy to be alone. No, she wanted to be with one person, one very specific person but that couldn't happen. Never again.  It was stiflingly hot in her room so she threw open her window to try and tempt a non-existent wind to blow in. Or at least that's what she told herself she was doing. She didn't light a candle just in case there were guards watching to make sure she didn't try and leave. When all she wanted was to make a run for freedom, a run for the forest, a run towards Rob-. No. She couldn't think that way. If she did it would be too tempting and she knew she would run. Run straight to his arms. That was the real reason why she couldn't sleep tonight, what if he came for her. She wouldn't need much convincing all he had to do was ask and she would go with him to the edge of the world. But he would not come. he had come for her this afternoon and she had said no, she had gone on about Guy's good qualities. Well, there were none! She had hurt the one man she would willingly die for. She had seen the second all the fight went out of him, the moment he had realised that she would never be his wife. When every part of her cried out for him to take her in his arms, to kiss her like he had when they were young. She had hurt him to make it easier, but for whom she wasn't sure. she had tried to make the spark go back into his eyes, but he had refused to rise to her challenge. And then he had left. She had known the moment he hadn't turned round when she called, that she had lost him for good. She hadn't reacted knowing it was better if he gave up, before he thought up one of his incredible stupid plans that would get him killed. But now she couldn't hold it together anymore. She fell to the floor underneath the window holding on as if it was the only thing left. In a way it was, the tears falling from her eyes had blinded her. She couldn't see anything and the world was silent except for her gasping sobs, the only thing that let her know that she was still alive was the feel of the wood against her hand. She sobbed hard. For all the things she lost when Robin left, for all the things that had happened since and for all the things she once again lost when she let him walk through the door downstairs only a few meagre hours ago. She had started to shake with the force of her sobs and it was getting harder to hold onto the windowsill as her crying took away all the strength she had left. Her hand was slowly slipping from the windowsill when she felt his touch. He grabbed her hand interlocking his fingers with hers and slowly stroking his thumb up and down hers. She gasped and pulled away, wishing the instant she did, that she could hold on tighter and never let go.
"Well, I can't say I'm surprised. You always did run away whenever I reached out for you."
His head came into view, that infuriating grin across his smug face. But at that moment she didn't care how much that grin normally made her want to punch him. He had come back.  Then she noticed the twinkle in his eyes, the one that made her want to laugh and scream. That part of Robin was missing. And she guessed that it was her that had stolen it. Then she realised what he had said.
"Excuse me. I ran away from you? Who ran away to the Holy Lands before our wedding? Who ran out the door this afternoon because they weren't getting thier own way? Oh yes, that would be the infamous Robin Hood."
She arched her eyebrow waiting for his reply. His rougish grin was dominating his face, as he playfully blew her a kiss.
"So you noticed."
A giggle escpaed her, she couldn't help it he just had that effect on her.
"Yes I did notice, it was hard not to see you storming out of my home. Especially since you had that look on. The one that just screams 'I Am going to go and sulk now."
"I have no such face My Lady, you are making that up."
His eyes were laughing as he protested his innocence, as both remebered  quiet clearly that he did have such a look and it had been used on many occasions. She knew she shouldn't but she went and knelt down, her arms resting on the windowsill. She gazed up at him, the pain felt because she had hurt him, showing clearly on her face. He could never resist her, even if he was furious at her because she refused to be saved, he was even more furious at himself because he could not save her. He knew she wanted to apologise but couldn't, looking into her face he sighed. She looked worried thinking he would leave. But thats not why he sighed; he knew now he would never stop being in love with her. He reached across tucking that stray piece of hair behind her ear, the one that always seemed like it was trying to escape, just like her and cupped her cheek. He was grateful she didn't flinch as she had done when he first returned.
"I am sorry Marian. This is all my fault, I should have just left that stupid necklace with you. I just....couldn't stand it. He got to be with you and shower you with the gifts you deserved. All I could do was watch from afar. I was scared when I thought that you liked it, that he was winning you over."
He had said it all in a  rush worried she would interrupt before he could apologise properly. She pulled back now, confusion evident in her face. She slowly stood up and looked at him studying him for some fault in his apology. Her thoughts were all whirled together. Robin Hood didn't apologise. Never mind that, Robin of Locksley never apologised. he looked at her so sincerly that she just wished he were far away.  She groaned and only realised she had groaned aloud when Robin jumped up looking at her very concerned.
"Marian are you alright?"
"Yes Robin, I'm fine. I just....you need to leave. I need to get some sleep for the wed- for tomorrow. You should go now."
He was staring at her. Uhg! He was staring at her with that knowing smile of his, the one that said 'I know what your thinking about and its me.' Of course she was thinking about him, he was hanging outside her window. Her mind was drawn back to him as a whole when he sighed. He was doing that all too much for her liking tonight.
"I got to close again, didn't I?"
She couldn't figure out what he was talking about for the life of her. Then she thought back to their earier conversation.
"Are you trying to imply that i am running away from you again?"
He smiled obviously pleased that she had realised what he was talking about.
"Yes My Lady, though there is no need to imply since it is a fact."
"Robin. Stop it right now. You want to tell me something just say it, stop hiding behind implications and smirks. I have never run from being close to you.!
"Marian, I knew you from birth and I still had to fight you before you would let me get intimate with you. The only thing I want to say is you better be prepared to stop being so afraid that people will hurt you. Especially if you are marrying that piece of filth tomorrow."
He realised he had pushed it to far but he refused to back down now. This had to be done. If he lost her to him he would die. She was shocked by what he said and her voice shook with suppressed anger as she answered him.
"I have never been afraid people will hurt me, that is until the person i was set to marry left me. If I remerber correctly I let you close plenty of times especially the closer our wedding got. You have no right to say those things about me, you also have no right to insult my intended either."
She thought he would retaliate at the mention of Guy but he shocked her by laughing.  Not hearty laughing of course but the dry laugh of someone who knows something you don't.
"Marian, letting me kiss you was not being intimate."
He swung up and into her room. He was staring right at her but now he was inside the dark room she couldn't see the look on his face. He seemed to fill up the room with his presence so to distract herself she went and lit a candle so she could see what he was doing.  When she turned back around he was right in front of her. He started walking her against the wall; he put his arms on either side of her and brought his face closer. She could see his eyes had darkened with the desire he felt for her. As he brought his face closer she thought he was going to kiss her. She had partly opened her lips ready to kiss him back. But he stopped an inch from her. The desire was still there and the space between them was filled with a thick tension. Both wanted to feel the others lips upon their own but Robin knew she needed to remeber before she would leave Gisborne of her own free will. He moved closer until his lips where a hairs breadth away from hers and she could feel them move agaisnt hers as he whispered to her.
"Just remember our first kiss."
Then he was gone.
