The digital version of issue 35 is now here!

Obviously, this is the first time we've done this -- hence the delay. relvetica has worked her tailfeathers off to make this .pdf collection downloadable and lovely, and now you can have it on your very own devices! Feel free to link, share, and distribute this version wherever you like, as long as you play by ( Read more... )

I use the Calibre ebook management program. It's free and also converts to .epub and other formats.

here is BB 35 in .mobi and .epub if you'd like to share these as well

I love Calibre! Calibre can also convert from a word document, or from html, and I think those tend to convert better vs a pdf. (unless I'm wrong about that -- I only use Calibre in a very basic way. I just tend to have much more trouble with converting pdfs, since in some ways they're more like an image file and the formatting can more easily be lost using it as a source)

If the PDF hasn't started out acting like a scanned image, they will convert!

Downloaded. Thank you for the recommendation -- I've spent a lot of time squinting at the Mac App store's selection of epub editors and despairing this week.

I was under the impression that .mobi was waning in popularity, but I guess I was incorrect!

I just know I use .mobi's for my kindle ap, I have no idea if they are popular! Although you're talking to someone who only recently stopped using an old palm pilot and .pbr or .pbz's or something like that.

As for PDFs>Epubs in Calibre, it's not always perfect, but I have minimal issues with the conversions. It's never made something unreadable.

Yeah, I can see that I am going to need to play around with this before I can put out an epub version I'm happy with. But in the meantime, I have happily edited the metadata on the PDF and reuploaded the file. So... hopefully that worked, since Preview doesn't show metadata so far as I can tell, haha.

Thank you for your comments and advice!

I was poking around in the Calibre FAQ last night: they actually mention that there's an order of best-to-convert-from to worst. EPub is near the top, PDF is at the bottom. Mostly food for thought, I guess, since as long as it's mostly readable it's good.

Well, I would not be using the the final PDF as my starting place for further conversion; once something is in PDF, it's pretty stiff to work with. I most likely would back up a few steps and convert from something more flexible, like HTML or RTF.

I was able to convert to .epub from .doc using Pages, and it worked... all rightish, but I was unhappy with it since it's not exactly a dedicated converter and I couldn't do anything much with it from there layout-wise. Calibre is, so I just need to familiarize myself with it.
