I regret to say that the *retail* bookstore experience has been going downhill for me for quite some time already. Me, I'm partly responsible, too. But geez, you would think stores would want to cater all the more to the people who do walk in their door. Who do come in with money to spend. You'd think they'd want to keep their place clean and their signage accurate. But maybe we're asking too much.
Maybe they have become too short staffed and care too little.
It's not all doom and gloom for bookstores. The bookstore nearest my house just recently took over the business next door (a photography place where I had my passport photo taken), and in doing so, doubled in size. They have bucked the trend. Sales are up for them. The only books I've bought lately are cookbooks, but at least I'm using them. :-) I plan to keep supporting them so they don't go under, which means lots of good meals around here.
Don't know if your iPod ever dried out, but I highly recommend the "How to Cook Everything" cookbook app by Mark Bittman. It's $3 I think, but worth every penny.
