AMAQ: (Talkin' bout) Death on the Fourth of July*

Here in America, today was Independence Day. Tonight's the night with the boom and the flash and the smoke and the wtf music. I went to an early July 4 party over the weekend at childe_dirk's, and I got my US RDA of fireworks then; as such, I'm skipping tonight's festivities in favor of getting home from work and resting ( Read more... )

Awesome. Sounds like a good experience.

I've had a couple of close calls. The two that I remember most vividly, my thoughts were "Am I dead?" (after my Hollywood style car crash), and "Damn. I always knew I was going to drown", (after peeling off of a rock face; the world went rock-sky-water). In both cases the thoughts weren't ironic, just matter-of-fact. Complete acceptance.

It's like the final refrain of one of my favorite poems:

Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.
