Title: Ain't No Sunshine
Pairing: Adam Lambert/Kris Allen
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 886
Summary: Kris has a thing about Adam's shadow. Adam is ever so obliging.
Disclaimer: Not real, unfortunately.
Author's Notes: This' my first fic really, but Adam and Kris were just too tempting and adorkable together. <3

The first time Kris had seen the man with the black nail polish, he had not thought it was a veneer, coating some degree of rebellion. Instead, Kris had had to drag his eyes away from the tapered fingers and strong wrist. They were not feminine hands - they were smooth and deft and decidedly masculine. They were captivating.

The first time Kris had seen the artfully-applied eyeliner, he had looked straight into eyes that were light and blue and laughing. The man had just been good-naturedly clapped on the back by the girl next to him. There were animated hand gestures and joking face-pulling. Kris had not noticed much of that. He had wondered how someone could smile more using their eyes alone, than he had seen some people do with their tinkering laughter and bleached teeth.

The first time Kris had seen the painstakingly flat-ironed hair, dyed a shade so dark it could not possibly have been natural, he had not thought to compare it with his chestnut, unstyled own. Kris had noticed the dusting of freckles across the man’s arms and neck. He should have reasoned that the man was a natural ginger, and then reprimanded his mind for making dirty jokes about whether he was ginger all over. But, Kris had not gotten that far into the reasoning process - his eyes had been distracted by the trail of freckles on the man’s chest, going down and down into the vee of his shirt-opening.

The first time Kris found himself standing next to the man, it had been outdoors where the midday sun was high and the shadows short (though, Kris had noted how the man’s shadow fell ever so slightly on his feet, and it had given Kris the oddest thrill to be in something that belonged to the man). Kris eyed his feet as they discreetly shuffled closer to the man, which would explain why he was surprised by a hand suddenly appearing in his field of vision.

“‘m Adam. It sure is sunny around here, huh. Wish I hadn’t forgotten to bring my shades out.” Kris had no idea how Adam managed to sound like he was chatting with someone he’d known his whole life.

“Kris,” he said as he extended his own hand. Making eye contact with Adam up-close made Kris realize how much taller the other man was.

With his face up-tilted, Kris scrunched his nose as he squinted through the sun’s sudden head-on glare. “It’s awful when your height disadvantage damages your retina more than your ego,” he half-joked through a lopsided smile.

Adam chuckled, amused. “You’re strange,” he said affectionately. Kris was confused by the way Adam had said it - in the same way Kris would have said “you’re cute” to his newly-wed wife, as he ruffled her blonde hair. Kris tried to squash the niggling wonder if Adam would ever ruffle his hair.

“If the shadows were longer, I’d have let you shelter in my shadow,” Adam offered with a twinkle in his eye.

Kris had to forcibly stop his eyes from darting down to his feet. They had found guilty pleasure in what little bit of Adam’s shadow they had been in just minutes ago; the traitorous things. He realized with a start that he was finding similar pleasure in Adam’s genial offer. Kris tried not to think too deeply into that.

“We’d have to be standing pretty close, then.” After a belated pause, Kris continued to deadpan, “and you’d better not be taking a jab at my height”.

“Standing close to you would hardly be a chore,” Adam said ambiguously. Kris was glad he could have blamed his subsequent blush on impending sunburn.

Before Kris had time to respond, Adam added with sudden enthusiasm, “did you know that the ancient Egyptians used kohl to protect their eyes from the sun’s glare?” Pointing to his own black-lined eyes mischievously, Adam said, “which is why I must say I’m the one who’s better equipped to deal with the sun here”.

Kris could not help a startled laugh. Adam was just so peculiar and unconventional and exciting.

“I’m sure you are”, Kris conceded, grinning. “I’ll be sure to take you up on that offer.”

“Awesome. I guess I’d better stock up on some eyeliner then?” Adam said with mock seriousness.

“You sure this isn’t just a convenient excuse to buy more eyeliner?” Kris said.

“Bitch,” Adam laughed. “I can tell we’re going to get along famously already”, he said as he loped an arm around Kris’ shoulders.

The first time Kris had found out he would be sharing a bedroom with Adam throughout the entirety of their Idol journeys, his heart had not skipped a beat. Kris had felt a strange calm settle over him. He knew with sudden clarity that he just had to step up his game and stay in the Idol competition as long as possible. After watching all of Adam’s performances thus far, Kris knew he did not have to worry about Adam - he would be staying in the competition till the very end. Kris just had to make sure that he was the one to stand next to Adam on the final stage.

What did make Kris’ heart flutter was the fact that Los Angeles had largely sunny weather year-round.
