I've read that the Pentagon, Secretary of Defense Gates and the President have all endorsed the full repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Supposedly that's closer than it's ever been to being repealed. All we need now is to overcome the 60 vote filibuster-proof threshold in the Senate. It's funny that you posted that because I just had a conversation about that with my moms boyfriend. My brother left two days ago for the national guard and my moms bf was in the military for six years. He said that he feels like they don't want gays in the military because they don't teach you that you're fighting for your country- they teach you that you're fighting for your 'brohers to the right and left of you' and they teach you to function as a unit rather than an individual. I guess he was trying to say someone that is gay would be looked at as an outsider to the macho guys and it would be harder to bond with them. I told him thats not true and at this point in time at least my generation doesn't look at peoples sexuality as defining what kind of a person they are. He was saying that in other militarys like France, they allow gays, but he doesn't think America is ready for that. It's very sad he has that mentality but I think a lot of people do.
