I think an argument could be made that Temple of Doom was supposed to be a parody of colonial adventure stories. But the accuracy of that argument depends on whether or not the decision-making involved in the film's production was motivated by either: a) genuine belief in the accuracy of their portrayal of Indian culture, b) that they were knowingly ignorant of India, its customs and cultural practices, and that they just didn't care, or c) they knew exactly what they were doing, insofar as they were both exploiting America's generally poor understanding of international cultures and sending up colonial adventure tales of yesteryear ( ... )
