The parasocial relationship phenomenon has always blown my mind. I first learned about it when I was reading something that said women who watch soap operas (in particular) live longer and generally report higher levels of happiness. They perceive that their social circles are larger than they really are, and they get all the physiological benefits from it. Fascinating.

I think a little the same about fandom, actually; I mean, at least here the relationships are with real people and they aren't one-sided, but, the large majority of friends here are not the kind of friends I can call up to help move, or see a movie, or borrow clothes from, etc. My social-circle-in-reality is slightly larger, as I've met some people in meat-space, and I am so close to some people that they may as well be friends-in-reality, but my perception of my social circle has skyrocketed.

Yeah, I definitely think it can be a good thing (as you illustrated) and then a less good thing when a person reduces their social circle to only parasocial relationships
