Batman's Got A Gun... (Detective Comics 710)

Feb 22, 2006 23:42

We all know Batman hates guns. Has sworn never to use them. A number of authors make points of how he's never touched them, blah blah blah. And I'm more than willing to state that he abhorrs them and certainly doesn't use them in the manner that one typically thinks of when someone says "using a gun."

But if anyone says can't use a gun... well... ( Read more... )

Anyone who says Batman can't use a gun is a moron who knows nothing about Batman. As much as I prefer the villains (especially the Riddler, who is an expert marksman himself), why in the world would Batman ignore a tool that many he fights use?! That's just stupid to think that because he won't use them himself, he won't learn how to handle them just as well, if not better than his foes.

PS: I think I'm the only one in the world who really didn't care for Batman Begins... Just myeh. Mediocre film.

You're correct in fact Bruce, not only knows how to use a gun he is an expert on their use (as in most things), and made a point of training the various Robins in their use as well. While he abhors firearms his viewpoint is that in order to combat a weapon he must fully understand it - hence he made himself an expert marksman.

Of course if you go back far enough (i.e. Golden Age) he actually used guns himself on several occasions and the first version of the Bat-plane had machine guns mounted on its fuselage..

heh. I'm of the opinion, that the Golden Era Batman, especially the Batman in detective comics before the Batman series began, was really more of a Proto-Batman. You can see the seeds of the character forming, but he wasn't Really Batman yet. The mythos hadn't formed and they were still hammering out what worked and what didn't work with his character. Interesting in a historical context... but not *really* Batman. Not yet.

i'm surprised that no one has mentioned batman year two: fear the reaper. it's just about the only comic were batman straps on a gun and uses it.

I believe Year 2 FTR is out of cannon.... pretty much for that reason on top of it being an abysmally bad story. I know one of the Y2 stories is out of cannon, and I'm pretty sure that's the one.
