Oh, this is so gorgeously written. Such a fantastic voice, you've conveyed so much in so little.
It's like the written equivalent of Stanley Kubrick's trademark zoom-out shot. At the beginning we aren't even sure who's talking, but by the end we have the picture of what's going on clear in our head. [very fitting, considering your reference to The Shining!]
