http://community.livejournal.com/batmanjoker/218246.html Bruce was halfway through his second piece of dry toast, just about the only thing his stomach seemed to be able to handle at the moment when the slamming of heavy doors rang out in the manor. He winced and peeked out around the corner into the hallway in time to see an extremely pissed off looking Rachel round it, spot him and stalk forward with a determined glare. Bruce had the distinct impression things were not going to go well for him today, not at all. He opened his mouth the offer a tentative greeting but was promptly cut off. “Bruce Wayne you big idiot what the hell where you thinking! No wait scratch that you obviously weren’t!”
Bruce blinked owlishly and backed up a little, though shorter and slighter then he was Rachel Dent was a formidable and now extremely annoyed woman. “….What?” came the intelligent response his mind flailing at the sudden attack.
“How could you do it? And to Jack no less he’s your best friend!” She planted her hands on her hips and glared harder. Bruce felt his stomach drop.
“Rachel…I..I’m sorry, I’m sure you must be shocked and angry I slept with Jack but..”
“What? Bruce..” She gave a long frustrated sighed and rubbed her forehead before beginning carefully. “I am not mad you slept with Jack, I AM mad and very shocked that you did so and then RAN AWAY like a coward the next morning! How could you do that to him Bruce? That man loves you!”
Bruce felt a little ill again and sat down heavily in a near by chair. “Wait…I…but Rachel, Jack…is…Jack.” He finished lamely.
“Yes, that’s right he is, and because he is you shouldn’t even have been able to hurt him so badly! You two have been through everything together. For the past eighteen years I have watched you two become the closest two people could ever hope to get and not be married or have sex! I knew someday you two would quit beating around the bush and just get together but I never thought you’d be so…so immature about it!”
Bruce felt himself get a little angry. “Immature? Well how would you feel if you suddenly woke up in bed with the Jo…with the last person you ever thought you would and a person of the same sex to boot?”
Rachel rolled her eyes. “Is THAT what this is about? Sex? Bruce you were always the most open minded guy I knew besides Jack! Or does that open mindedness only apply too everyone else’s life?” She took in his haggard appearance for a long silent moment and then sighed and sat down across form him. “ Bruce, what does it matter what color we are or eve what sex we born as, in this world love comes and goes far to easy, one second and it could be gone.” Bruce winced and looked at her chest a little tight. “In the end, it doesn’t matter what the person is that we love, just that we love that person. Love what they are on the inside not the out. Jack is a kind and loving friend, he was there for when no one else was or could be. He has loved you for years, and I could see you loved him too, don’t let your chance for love slip by! Not when it could very well be the best thing that’s ever happened to you.”
Bruce had stared at her through her speech and felt a little in awe. Rachel always had been able to see the best in people and cut right to pint of any issue. He had loved her, more then he could ever say. “But…you and I..” he trailed off.
“You and I had our chance. We were always better friends then lovers Bruce. You knew it and I knew it. That’s why we finally stopped the break ups and make ups. They never lasted and I could see you loved someone else in a far more real way. “ He swallowed thickly, he suddenly felt like a monster, this Gotham’s Bruce had probably been dreaming about being with Jack even if only to himself for years, and Bruce had drunkenly taken that from him, and probably ruined things with Jack for either of them. “I knew you wanted a normal life, with a family and you thought you wanted it with me, but I saw it years ago…that special smile that was reserved just for him and the way your eyes got soft when you spoke of Jack…this was the natural next step, and even though it was done the wrong way, drunk and then ditched the next day, it could still be the best thing to ever happen to you.”
“How?” He croaked voice failing him. The idea that he, even if it as the other Bruce, could be so loved and love even if in secret in return made his chest ache.
“Go to him, make it right. Save this before you lose him!” She said firmly, but her gaze had softened, seeing she had made progress. Bruce nodded wordlessly and rose, Rachel following suit. “Good. I’m going to go home now, but you better get on the phone, or better yet, he’s in his office at Wayne Enterprises, go get your man!” She gave him a sweet smile and turned about to leave when Bruce called out to her.
“Rachel….” He took a steadying breath. He knew he had to make things right, for everyone. “Thanks.” She flashed him a bright smile and took her leave. Bruce sighed and rested his head in his hands for a moment. He had a lot of work to do, and already his mind was forming a plan he dreaded but knew there was no other option to use instead. Mind set he turned and found Alfred standing there.
“Going to go fix things with Master Jack sir?”
“..How did you?”
“Know sir? I know you sir, and the only person you ever hang your head for and look that worried about is ever only Master Jack sir.”
Bruce gazed back at Alfred and for a moment he was terribly jealous again of the life that this Bruce had. He had Rachel his parents….and he had Jack. Nodding silently again He gathered his coat and the keys to one of the cars and jogged out of Wayne Manor, Alfred’s parting call of good luck following behind him. The ride to his offices was surprisingly short and he found himself wishing it took a little longer, he was dreading this, only because he had made up his mind that the only way to make things right was to tell the other man the truth, the whole truth and hope to god he didn’t have him committed. Not that he would blame him at this point. A quick scan of the company directory and he was in the elevator sweating nervous bullets.
He tried his best to look authoritative in his jeans and polo but knew he was failing as Jack’s secretary raised a brow but graciously said nothing. He was going to knock but he decided that he probably didn’t normally when he visited Jack so he went in. His eyes were wide when he say Jack sitting in the open office window, eyes distant and mouth frowning. “Jack! What are you doing?” He said voice rising in panic slightly.
“Bruce? What are you doing here?” He frowned deeper and turned to look at him. “I’m enjoying the fresh air like I always do why…wait…do you think I would jump? Get over yourself Bruce, I’m not going to kill myself over you.” He grumbled but climbed off the sill and moved back to his desk. Bruce felt a little relived when he moved away from the window but then a little ashamed at the statement and coughed a little. After several moments of silence Jack raised a brow. “What do you want Bruce?” His voice was annoyed but Bruce could hear the hurt and sadness beneath that and it made his stomach twist into knots, if he didn’t already feel like a jerk, he would have definitely then. “
“To talk.” Jack snorted and crossed his arms. “And to fix this.”
“And how do you plan to do that?” He asked not hiding the anger in his voice now.
“By telling you the truth.” He paused until Jack made an impatient gesture for him to continue. “ I’m not Bruce. At least not the one that belongs here. By here I mean this Gotham. I come from another Gotham, one where a lot of things are very different..” He would have continued but a solid punch to his jaw stopped him mid sentence and he found himself staring at a very angry Jack Napier.
