So the deal is that supposedly my old site was not going to be up for grabs until jan 18th. I was just going to re-register it then. Guess I was wrong! It seems that the wonderful folks at "Ultimate Search" managed to register my site to themselves on the 28th of December. I'm really not quite sure how that all works. Using your real name, or a derivative thereof is the easiest way to go, in my opinion. It makes it easier to recognize when people are talking to you, as you get used to the name.

King Awesome is pretty good, too.

yes. out of curiousity, I did a google on batjew.com and found like 3-4 sites whose sole purpose is to report which site registrations are expiring soon and what kind of traffic they get. I just don't understand how those annoying fucks registered my site 3 weeks before it was supposed to expire. The internet is stupid.
