Can You All Swim?

Jul 11, 2009 12:41

This is totally random...but I guess it's sometimes overlooked.
I live in Greece and we are surrounded by sea so we take swimming for granted sometimes.
But I found out some of my USA friends couldn't swim! o_0
I guess it figures if there is no sea anywhere near you.... But still :)

So can you guys swim? Where/when/how did you learn to swim?

i learned in primary school, but i'm really rather bad at it
i can't go long distances because i just get dead tired too quickly
in a life and death situation though, i think i'd be able to keep myself afloat...

i learned at school entirely, and sometimes my parents would help me as well when we went away. i never swim/swam in the sea btw, i HATE it because i can't see clear through the water. it kinda really disgusts me. LOL.

i haven't gone swimming for at least 3 years i think. i used to go with friends in the summer when it was really hot, but it's not something i really enjoy doing anymore.

Haha i know it can be scary when the sea is not clear but it usually is in Greece, so we have no problem with that.
Then again we are in the Mediterranean so it is different I guess! *g*
OMG 3 years? o_0
Thats just too long. I would shoot myself if I hadnt gone swimming in a year! lol

I really liked water when I was a kid... I could be in there for hours. When we lived in the city my parents set up one of those pools you can buy and fill with water every summer. I think my mom taught me the basics in that and then I just took it to the next level myself. We have this big tree ship also. I've been sailing since I was 6 months old and whenever the weather permitted, I'd be put in a life-vest, tied to the ship and thrown into the ocean (from I was 3 or something and with other people in the water too, obviously ;)). I so wanted to be able to swim around without life-vest as the grown-ups so it was nice incitement. Then we moved to a place near a lake and I'd swim around forever every day during the summer. Then we had a year of lessons in school (didn't learn a thing, was stupid) and at the moment I swim for exercise 2-3 times a week at the swimming pool hall. I'm not a particular good swimmer. I've got no technique, because no one ever really taught me, but as of right now I can swim for and hour or so in a fair ( ... )

You are not boring me!
And wow...it is amazing that your parents took you sailing with them at such a young age!
Wow 6 months old? Thats pretty impressive!
I think my parents taught me how to swim when i was in elementary school. I must have been around 5 or 6!!
Athens has certain clea n beaches so i have been there but most of my swimming was done at our cottage house which is almost next to the sea! lol

But when they taught me my dad was holding my body asking me to flip my hands you know and then he left me and i was floating/swimming on my own... I was so proud! rotfl!!

Now i dont swim as much as I'd like. Maybe like 100 times during the summer and thats counting going to the sea twice or three times in the same day..which is kinda sad! lol

I love swimming! When I was younger I was really BAD at it. Thing is I had a fear of water because when I was about 2 I almost drowned. Seriously! I was terrified! But as I got older I didn't want to always be afraid, so I worked hard at it and now Im pretty good, I can swim long distances.

I blame my brother seriously! He was 4 and he threw his ring in the pool and jumped in, you know the normal male showing off! Now I was little but for some reason I wanted to copy him so I threw my ring in, jumped, MISSED and just went under ROFL

We have lots of pools but at leisure centres. I try and go every summer. We're doing it next year for uni so I'd like to go again to practise since I'd have to teach swimming :D I do enjoy it though.

Awws pools then! Thats cool! I guess they are safe and hygienic right? lol

I can swim but because I had asthma when I was a kid I suck at doing it for a long time.

I also learnt how to swim at primary school, we had a small outdoor pool there so it was good for learning how to swim. I haven't gone swimming properly in about 16 years or something though! When I starting going through puberty I got pretty paranoid about my body and stuff so I've kinda avoided going since then.

It is so interesting that in school you had such classes...
We only learned maths and physics!

i would kill to have such cool courses! ol
And wow, i love how a lot of you have pools...even the little ones..it still is cool! XD

Awws, well dont get me started about my body because i have gained 20 pounds in the last 3 years so I feel bloated and self-conscious...but still where i go swimming is pretty secluded so its fun! lol
