Yeah, this is the sort of thing that's been making me angry for years now. Unfortunately, Islamic law says that anything created before Islam existed is of no consequence. And actually could be more accurately expressed as "nothing before Islam existed". This isn't the first time I've heard of ancient artifacts being destroyed blithely.

A 2000 year-old Buddha was destroyed in broad daylight in Pakistan on a highly traveled road last November. No one interfered and the world has collectively yawned.
