I loved reading your commentary on these books. There are definitely a few there that I've been wanting to read, and I've also made mental notes of some other authors. I may even start 2009 with The Time Traveller's Wife!
This year my favourite was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. I think it deserves rank as one of my favourite books ever. I haven't seen the movie, but I hear it's something spectacular.
Love this list! I actually read some of the books you mentioned (which says something, seeing as I'm not even English/American). I loved People of the Book! You are right, in the middle it got a bit less entertaining, but nevertheless I liked it a lot. Especially Lola's story... I also read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas... not the English version, but still. I liked it... I didn't think about the Auschwitz error, to be honest, I can't remember how they solved that in the translated version... Did you know there is going to be a movie made of the book?
The end was kind of strange, to be honest... I felt it was a bit disconnected from the rest of the book. But not in a bad way, not at all... Actually, you missed quite some important news that explains some things! I can tell you, if you want to...
I'm not sure what kind of movie it'll be. I've only seen the teaser for it once, in the cinema, but it looked quite promising.
And there's no need at all to be jealous of me. I'm Dutch, and Dutch isn't exactly a world-known language... but I must admit it IS pretty cool when you're in the USA, and you talk Dutch, and everybody looks at you like 'What the heck are you doing?' :P

I'd be interested to see how they adapt Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. What kind of movie are they making?
What's your first/second language? So envious of you multi-lingual peoples.
