Since the events of Batman #1-3, our favourite pair has had at least one more encounter (and kiss) as Batman and Catwoman before they encountered each other as Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle..."Elva Barr."
Picking up with Batman #15, this seemingly final encounter doesn't end well for our anti-heroine...and somewhere along the way she dyed her hair brown? o.O
In this segment Selina gets her client to talk (and records the conversation) in order to learn as much about her as possible so that she can pose as her later on. Meanwhile, Bruce isn't convinced Catwoman had gone straight (with a normal job and everything) and decides to follow "Elva Barr" to investigate her motives further. He discovers that she plans on infiltrating (and of course robbing) an expensive wedding. And so things go and don't go according to plan:
Sometime in between scenes, Dick discovers where Catwoman is going to strike next and decides to prove himself to Bruce by going after her alone, until Bruce "papa spanks" him into talking. (Heh, if Bruce spanked Dick as a child, imagine what it was like for Helena growing up in Wayne Manor? Anyways, back to the main point of the story...)
While I find Selina's depiction in this story rather simplistic and follows the formulaic "woman motivated by love" trope, this story does, however, accomplish three things: (1) it establishes Bruce and Selina as each other's equal in terms of intelligence and ability to decieve one another, (2) it also establishes the beginning of a recurring trend of Bruce and Selina eventually meeting and briefly dating out of their guises as Batman and Catwoman, and (3) it solidifies Selina's mastery of disguises (already established in Batman #1) by learning as much about her potential victims as much as possible before robbing them. This story also marks the first she uses the "Elva Barr" identity, which she uses again in the modern continuity.
