I work in technical writing. Sometimes, deadlines can be moved (usually when the delays have been on the client's end). I still have worked late to meet deadlines. Leaving work after midnight late.

Relatedly, if they were working on a paper for a college class, and had technical issues (failing to click Save, computer exploding...) they wouldn't get a perfect grade for a late paper. They'd be expected to find alternative equipment and get the job done.

So, yes, you are justified.

But I'm also not a teacher, so your mileage may vary.

they need someone to help them develop a sense of personal accountability and pride in their work, so I think you are doing the right thing.

You're assuming your students understand what it means to be accountable...hahahaha. It only magnifies 20 fold when teaching college students (mine who plan to be teachers). Here's a real conversation ( ... )

I've been dealing with a colleague who keeps bitching about how she has to actually explain to 9th graders how to do a five-paragraph essay. "It's not HARD," she says. No SHIT it's not HARD, I think, and I say, "Well, no... but they have never done it before." COME ON.
