I was always wondering why the original definition 'pocket phone' had been rejected. We call them 'cell phone', Europeans call them 'mobile phone' while most of us carry them in our pockets. 'Pocket phone' sounds pretty cool to me :-) 'Cell phone' sounds like landline in a prison cell :-) while 'mobile phone' makes impression of its own mobility, detached from the owner.
I think the technology for cellular phones and internet has been around since the 1960s (at least for the military and maybe universities). I tell people all the time that I first got onto the internet in 1986 or '87 and they don't believe me. It was a much different animal back then--listservs and everything was text, but yep. To send someone a message or data though, you had to send over a dedicated line, or call them first to let them know you were sending info so they wouldn't answer their phone and get the horrible connection screeches! lol
Wow!!! I believe you, it's just sounds so unreal :-) and charming though at the same time. It's just like ... a reversed reality :-))) These days people text to avoid calls. But callings to notify about the arriving text... Cherry, you definitely made my evening!!! :-)))

I'm with you on the 'pocket phone' term but I may get weird looks if I start using that word......
