Well, I am in the middle of this. Not sure what media say, power is off since about 5pm yesterday (Nov.14, 2021). I am just getting tons of messages from my friends and colleagues who are separated from me on the islands and in the mountains.

Dang.

I got curious and checked out highway 1 on a map. That looks like it would be a cool road to check out... in better weather. Is it always like this where you live this time of year, or is this year particularly relentless?

Well, I added the water level diagram. In simple words, all Canadian standards are based on 2, 5, 10 and 50 year returning statistic, where 50 year is used for design of all the bridges, buildings etc. So this is way beyond those values. Last flood like this took place 150 years ago :-)

That puts things in perspective. The weather has been pretty nasty here in Seattle, but nothing compared to what's going on where you are.

Definitely. I live in Vancouver, but these days I work right there, 160km east from Vancouver. If you look at the picture with snow on the ground, this place is high up in the mountains. Millions tons of water wash the mountains down onto the valley. Where you see the "river" on photos, actually were dense forestry areas. Can you imagine the water level if those trees are all under the water?

Stunning photos! Thanks for posting. I'm now to LiveJournal (signed up because of this post). I'm in the US just south of you (Hood Canal area). I'm volunteering with my local County on disaster planning. I'd like to ask about using some of your photos for public outreach/education. All not for profit.

Sure, feel free to use them the way you want. I'll post more photos today taken from higher elevation looking down.
