Calling all HR peeps

I know I have at least two women on my friends list that are in HR.  I'd like to hear from them and others with an opnion on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay bill expected to be signed tomorrow.

My initial thoughts are this is AWESOME!  I've never understood why companies keep saleries secret from other employees.  Something about it's illegal to ( Read more... )

I am firmly against publishing salaries, despite the chance of me being discriminated against. Publishing salaries leads to "normalizing" salaries because we inherently don't want to piss people off. People at the same level are not always paid the same. Most companies don't publish perfomance evaluations either. Publlishing salaries leads to having to justify why people are making more money, which causes all kinds of morale issues.

I don't remember the Act/Case, but prohibiting folks from discussing pay amongst one another, at least for sure in Texas, is illegal. Something about unions...

It can be asked, but not required.

I don't know that I necessarily like the idea of publishing salaries either. Why piss off the ok-worker (who makes less) when they were happy enough not knowing that the stellar-worker (who makes more) makes more?
