Author’s Note: So here’s the thing. The chapters of this fic average at about 1000 words. Some go a little over, some go a lot under. I think one is 600 words. Complain and I’ll start quoting cazmalfoy’s favourite word to you :P j/k. Enjoy the fic and when the chapters are particularly short I might give you two in one day. Hell, I might do that anyway.
Disclaimer: I sure as heck don't own Torchwood, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer or ... Hell, I don't own anything except Libby. And I don't own this particular storyline. A lot of the dialog and stuff is stolen snagged from the episodes not because I’m lazy but because I love the episodes so much. But, remember, this is told from a Magic and Mayhem point of view, so a lot of it is different and adjusted and hopefully worth the read. Plus, it’s a fic. I’ll stop rambling on about how this isn’t mine now. Coz it’s not. Obviously. I’m not RTD. I ain’t even a man.

Chapter 9

10:18

The first Daleks Angel and Gwen encountered saw them long before they had chance to destroy them. There were five of them in a circle, nine humans; a variety of men, women and children of all age ranges, between them, waiting for transport.

The first Dalek to see them fired and Angel threw himself at Gwen, knocking her out of the way of the blast. She looked at him, thankfully, before the two of them scrambled to their feet and fired at the Dalek who had shot at them.

It was destroyed with a bang. Angel grinned at Gwen, who grinned back, before they turned their guns on separate Daleks, diving behind abandoned cars to avoid more extermination blasts.

“Bet you’re glad you didn’t stay in Hell now!” Gwen yelled across the road between them.

“Oh yes, because this is so much different!” Angel shouted back.

Gwen laughed, pointing her gun around the car and firing at a Dalek, screaming, “Run!” at the people they’d been taking. The people scattered, running for cover as the Daleks converged, trying to choose a target; Angel, who was a much better shot, or Gwen, who was shooting more often.

As they ran, one of the children slipped and fell, banging his little head against the kerb. Gwen swore, loudly, scrabbling around the car, getting to her feet and running across towards him.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Angel yelled after her.

“I can’t just leave him!” she shrieked back, dodging extermination, shooting and missing the dalek who had shot at her.

Angel let out an angered growl and shot the Dalek, jumping to his feet and running across the road, rolling half way and landing behind Gwen’s parked car before scrambling to his feet and following her.

She landed on her knees next to the child and touched his head. It wasn’t bleeding, luckily. “Honey? Can you hear me?”

“Now’s not the time!” Angel snapped, lifting the boy up with one hand and holding him between his forearm and chest, still covering them with the gun. “Run, now!” he told Gwen, forcefully. She didn’t need telling twice, running down the street towards the nearest cover, him fast on her heels.

“Remind me why I volunteered for this,” Owen said to Faith, as they sat, slumped against the rear bumper of a car, Daleks circling, looking for them.

“It’s a rush,” Faith told him. “Knowin’ that you could die at any moment.”

“I thought it was so I could impress Buffy,” Owen pointed out.

“You’re in love with her, aren’t you?” Faith asked, surprisingly softly.

“Yeah, I’m a glutton for tough women,” he replied.

“How long for?”

“What?”

“How long have you been in love with her?”

“Ever since she died,” Owen said. “I only worked it out recently.” He laughed, darkly. “About the time she worked out she was in love with Spike.”

“You and Angel should get together,” Faith joked. “You’re both pining after the same woman.”

“He is hot,” Owen conceded.

Faith laughed and he clapped a hand over her mouth. “We’re trying to be quiet, remember?”

She nodded into his hand, which he removed.

“He has got that whole dark and brooding thing going for him,” Owen continued. “Think he swings both ways?”

Faith shrugged. “Who knows?”

“Hm, there’s one way to find out,” Owen said, checking his gun’s recharge.

“Recharged yet?”

“Nope. We’re still dead if it finds us.”

“We got the two over-used ones, didn’t we?” Faith said.

He nodded. “Our bloody luck, that.”

She laughed, silently this time.

“So you think I should go over to and snog Angel?”

“Oh, definitely. With tongue. I hear he likes that. Just make sure he doesn’t fall in love with you before you shag.”

“Oh? Why not?”

“Because then he’ll lose his soul and try and kill you.” Faith checked her own gun. “Eighty-nine percent.”

“Mine’s on ninety-two.” He looked across the street at where Faith had dropped the power cells. “Could do a mad dash to get them back?”

“After you, Harper,” Faith said.

He snorted.

“If you do shag him,” she said. “I want details.”

“Oh? How many details?”

“Detailed details. I want to know about every freckle on that sexy body of his and how many times you kissed them.”

“Do vampires have freckles?”

“You tell me.”

“I will do.” Owen looked at his gun. “Ninety-six.”

“It’s a good job Daleks don't have good hearing. We’d be screwed by now the noise we’re making.”

“Yep.” She hefted her gun up. “I suggest you shoot the Dalek while I run for the power cells.”

“Deal.”

The gun beeped quietly to let Owen know it was recharged. “One ...”

“Two.”

“Three!”

The two of them jumped to their feet, Owen taking a moment to aim at the Dalek before he fired. In that moment, Faith ran for the road, somersaulting in the middle and landing next to the bag. She reached inside, finding a power cell and throwing it at Owen. Owen caught it as he landed back behind the car, reloading his gun and tossing the dead cell at Faith. She caught it, putting it in a separate pocket of the bag and reaching for another, which she reloaded hers with after firing her final shot at a Dalek about to find Owen.

She straightened up, put the bag over her shoulder and ran back across the road, offering Owen a hand up, which he accepted, pulling himself to his feet. “Do me favour?” he said.

“Not tell anyone about the conversation we just had?” He nodded. “Way ahead of you.” She hoisted up her gun. “Let’s go.”

10:21

Buffy was sat against the wall by Jack in almost the same pose. She wasn’t comatose, however, she was alert, watching Spike as he kept an eye on the monitors and Ianto as he sat, sipping coffee, his hands shaking. They were all terrified; she could tell. Spike was fingering the sleeve of his duster every ten seconds; something he only did when scared, Ianto was obvious thanks to his trembling fingers and Jack ... Jack was still just sat there, listening to the radio as Earth surrendered to the Daleks.

They had surrendered.

But Torchwood hadn’t given up the fight.

Buffy had sent them all out to fight and die for her while she sat waiting for ... for what? She wasn’t sure anymore. All she knew was she was waiting for an elusive alien to turn up and save them from other aliens.

She didn’t like relying on someone else to save the world. She wished she could do more.

“Humans selected for testing will follow Dalek instructions.”

Buffy’s blood ran cold. “Those voices,” she said, “so cold ... mechanical. Devoid of any emotion ...”

“The Cybermen are worse,” Ianto said, his voice shaking. “Be glad they’re not here too.”

She tucked her feet up and wrapped her arms around her knees.

“Daleks reign supreme. All hail the Daleks. You will obey Dalek instructions without question.”

Buffy stood up, walking across the hub and straight into Spike cool arms, resting her head against his chest. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered.

“What for, pet?”

“If I hadn’t have relied on you so much you wouldn’t have been at my birthday party and then ... and then you wouldn’t be here about to die ... and ...”

Spike silenced her with a kiss. “Shush,” he said, “I’d rather be here and die with you than be back there without you.”

“Really?”

“Really. In fact, I ...”

He broke off as something started beeping rhythmically.

Then a voice came across the comms. “Can anyone hear me? The subwave network is open, you should be able to hear my voice.”

Spike pushed Buffy away, gently, turning to the screens. “Someone’s trying to get through,” he said, trying to strengthen the signal.

“Is there anyone there?” the same voice said again.

“The whole world’s crying out. Leave it. There’s nothing we can do,” Jack said, weakly, from his spot by the autopsy bay.

Buffy rounded on him. “Make a choice; either be involved or don't make comments,” she snarled.

“This message is of the utmost importance. We haven’t much time,” the voice stated.

“See if you can strengthen the signal,” Buffy ordered Spike as Ianto walked over.

“I’m trying, love,” he replied.

“Just leave it,” Jack said again.

“Captain Jack Harkness, shame on you!” the voice shouted.

Jack jumped to his feet, running to the screen. “Now stand to attention, Sir!” the voice snapped.

“What? Who is that?” Jack asked as he joined the small group.

“That is what it takes to get you to get your ass in gear?” Buffy growled. “I should have tried that earlier.”

A woman appeared on the monitor. “Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister,” she announced.

Buffy blinked. She hadn’t been expecting that.
