“No!” Ianto shouted from Jack’s office.

“Oh come on!” Jack shouted back.

Gwen turned to look at Martha. “What’s going on?” she asked.

Martha smirked. “They’ve been arguing ever since they came in.”

“Oh?” Gwen quizzed. “What over?”

“No idea,” Martha admitted. “But they’ve been arguing more and more recently.”

“Any idea why?” Gwen asked.

Martha turned to her. “Are you always this nosy?” she asked.

“Yep,” Gwen replied, with a grin.

They turned, in sync, as Jack’s office door opened and Ianto came out, dignified as always, walking down the stairs, scowling, and heading through to the tourist office.  Seconds later the door opened again and Jack stepped out. “Ianto!” he yelled.  He received no reply.

“What happened?” Martha and Gwen asked together.

Jack glared at them both. “Ianto saw me with a woman.”

“He did?”

“He did.”

Having expected more of an answer, Gwen said, “How does he know she wasn’t a replacement technician?” Just thinking about the loss of Tosh hurt Gwen, but she bit back the tears.

“Because we already have a replacement technician,” Jack snapped. “Ianto’s taking over, remember?  And Mickey’s taking over the day-to-day things.”

“You’re letting Mickey Smith join Torchwood?” Martha asked, stunned.  She’d seen him in the hub a few times, but she had assumed it was merely temporary.

“That’s not the point,” Gwen said, shutting Martha up. She looked back at Jack. “Why did Ianto jump to conclusions?”

“Because we were pretty ... close,” Jack said, awkwardly. “But only because she’s an old friend. She was helping me choose something.”

“Uh huh.” Gwen looked at him sceptically. “And have you told Ianto that?”

“I tried, but he won’t listen,” Jack said, sadly.

“So, what were you doing?”

“I was buying something for Ianto. But I can’t prove that until the mail comes. And you know what the mail is like around here.” Jack pulled a face. “I don’t even know if it will come today.”

“You lost me,” Gwen said.

Jack smiled. “You’ll see.”

The cog door opened at that moment and Ianto stepped in, throwing a small parcel and a letter at Jack. “Your mail,” he announced, irritably, before disappearing again.

“Ianto!” Jack called after him. He was ignored, again. He sighed and looked down at the small box. “It came!” he exclaimed. “Oh, thank goodness.”

“What is it?” Gwen asked.

Jack grinned. “He should be the first to know that!” he announced as he practically skipped towards the cog door, ripping the brown paper from the box.

“You get stranger every day, Jack Harkness!” Gwen yelled after him. He merely laughed as he checked the contents of the small black box.

When Jack arrived in the tourist office, he found Ianto slouched behind the desk, pretending to read a magazine, looking thoroughly despondent.

“Ianto,” Jack said, softly, bouncing the box between his hands. “Do you want to know who the woman was and what we were doing?”

Ianto shrugged. “I suppose.”

Jack walked around and stood in front of the desk, dropping the box on top of the magazine. “She’s an old friend ... we met a few years ago when she came across a stone that wasn’t of Earthly origin.  I wanted her help with this.” He pointed at the box.

“Is this when I’m supposed to say ‘oh, Jack, what is it?’?” Ianto asked.

“Yes, but preferably without the sarcasm.”

Ianto rolled his eyes. “So what is it?”

“Have a look.”

Eyebrow raised, Ianto opened the lid of the box, revealing a simple, gold band. His eyes widened and he looked up at Jack in shock.  Jack smirked at him.  Ianto pulled the ring from the velvet lining and looked at it.  Inscribed in the middle was ‘Yours for as long as we have’.  Ianto stared at it. “Jack ...” he breathed.

“Ianto Jones,” Jack said, formally, “will you marry me?”

Gobsmacked, Ianto continued to stare silently at the band.

“Uh ... Ianto?” Jack said, nervously, wondering if the answer would be no.

Ianto’s head snapped up for his eyes to meet Jack’s. “What?  Y-Yes! Absolutely!” he exclaimed, standing up and walking around the desk to hug Jack, who was grinning from ear to ear.  “I never thought ...”

“You never thought I’d want to marry the man I love?” Jack quizzed.

“No ... I mean, yes! You didn’t strike me as the settling kind.”

Jack rolled his eyes. “What kind did I strike you as?”

Ianto grinned. “You don’t want to know,” he replied.

“So, you’ll marry me?”

Ianto nodded fervently. “Yes! Yes!” he insisted, kissing Jack hard.  After a moment he pulled back. “Um ... yeah ... sorry for accusing you of cheating on me, by the way.”

Jack laughed. “Forgiven,” he said, kissing the top of Ianto’s head. “You’ve accused me of worse things in your time.” He smirked. “Want to tell the others the good news?  I can’t wait to see the look on Mickey’s face!”

~End~
