It's easy to track Russ if you've got the nose for it - and, as it happens, Preston does. Even in human form, which is the form he's currently in. He prefers it, and in any case it's easier to communicate; to explain why he's leading the leader of the vampires straight towards the alpha, if any of the Pack wolves come across them and decide to ( Read more... )

Russ is up by the Cloud Gate, facing out towards the water, smoking.

At the sound of footsteps, though, and the scents, he whirls, not quite snarling.

He's a little on edge, maybe.

Claire raises an eyebrow.

"We need to drag them all out in public. It needs to be something that everyone sees."

"Hear fucking hear."

He lowers his head. "Executing people for stirring us up isn't gonna look real good to everyone else, though." He gives Claire a not-really-a-smile. "Makes us look like animals."

"Well," Preston says, rather diffidently. "It's not, if we're right. It's - I'm not a fan of executions. But it is a trial for murder. Murders.

"Which - does a couple things. The biggest I can think of is set a precedent for murder trials, which, if it's handled right, is kind of big."

He takes a breath.

"The other is letting people see you two working together. Wolf leader and vamp leader."

Claire thinks on this for a second.

"If people are tried for murder."

She pauses.

"It would make being a vampire an unhappy thing."

Russ' lip curls, and he pulls his cigs and lighter out to light up.

At his most mild: "It's more than possible to survive as a vampire without killing your donors."

"We don't kill donors," Claire says. "We kill people who aren't donors."

She glares at Russ. "Stop smirking. You think you won't go down with this too? Mauling a person? Mauling a vamp?"

"I'm not in the habit of killing people who haven't done anything to me and mine."

"You can make a point," Preston says, to Claire, "without murder."

He glances at Russ. "Same goes for you. For anyone.

"We're past the hand-to-mouth, the kill-or-be-killed stage now, or we should be. This city's becoming a pretty good place to live, in parts. So of course someone's trying to fuck it up. Why can't we take the opportunity to make it better?"

His voice, still low, gains animation as he speaks.

"If anyone can start working for that it's you two."

"Flaw in your plan, Bass. We don't have a judge. And I'm not open to 'elections', the farce that they'd be."

Claire shifts and cocks her hip. If she can get hers to go along... well. There's something to be said for a law system valuing life.

"Someone neutral. From the shelter, maybe."

The name 'Gwen' flashes through Preston's mind. He ignores it, mostly because he feels like if he says it his life will not last very long.

"Someones," he suggests instead.

"Panel of judges? Supreme Court-style. Though twelve might be a little much. Definitely three, though - wolf, vamp, unmutated."

Claire is still staring at Russ.

"We'd have to get community leaders together. Figure this out as a city. First, we need to get them, though."

Her smile is grim. Even if she does have one of the judges... It'll make community relations interesting.

He looks back at her.

"So who gets to talk to the guys at the shelter?"

. . . Preston is not sure that the question is directed at him. He is not, after all, a community leader or anything; just a bass player, when all's said and done.

However: "I live there," he offers. Mildly.

(A bass player with a nearly-major in International Relations?)
