I lost my driver's liscense when I was in Italy a couple months back, so for the first three weeks back in the States I had to rely on my passport to get into bars. I never had a problem, and I think it's lame that some places won't accept it!! Most bars have a "State ID" handbook with pictures and descriptions of how ID's from different states are supposed to look, maybe you can ask them if there's a passport page in it as well if they deny it? It IS a Federally issued document, after all...
