Some seriously nerdy and obscure Tron:Legacy rambling up in this post
So I was pointed to this rad little ficlet by
infiniteviking called
loop while answerAnd because Tron Tumblr fans are ridiculous/awesome they managed to figure out the
names of all the random programs competing in the games. Including the
4 guys Sam teams up with on the lightcycle grid This fic is amazing not only cos it's a great little story, but the idea of programs being re-rezzed after the games helps this movie make so much more sense to me now. Like okay..
The games in general always struck me as a bit weird for a few reasons.
1) There's not that many programs on the Grid.
I mean sure there's a lot, okay, but for this kind of mass execution to take place on a regular basis it would put a SERIOUS dent in the population lol. Combined with the fact we know Clu can't create new programs (or appear on their own after Clu poisoned the sea of simulation), why would he waste so many potential troops for his big Initiative in the games? I mean he's totally a hedonistic nutjob but that seems like too much of a waste even for him.
2) There are a fuckload of programs watching the games. And all of them are cheering wholeheartedly for their fellow programs to get fuckin' demolished!
I mean sure, it's not so far-fetched that they wouldn't just be your run of the mill mob out for blood. But the whole thing seems a little weird when coupled with the whole PROGRAM SOLIDARITY, DOWN WITH THE USERS thing Clu is drilling into their brains.
3) Some of these combatants really know their shit.
Maybe Clu kept the same "denounce the Users and you'll get super awesome warrior training" policy, but on top of being in the know, a lot of these seem like fan favorites. It's pretty clear that Rinzler NEVER loses, so it's not like a single one of them would ever survive. So how do they gain hero status unless they're somehow able to come back from a loss?
Also the 4 buddies they give Sam on the lightcycle grid seem pretty cool and collected about all this. And the one program's comment about their bikes being faster, how would he know that? Probably cos he's been run over before lol.
And last and most obscure
4) Nervous Program from the beginning of the movie. The one wiggin' out about being sent to the games. Why does he care?? Sure it's probably just a device to make the audience like, "whoa this 'Games' shit must be bad news" But it felt lazy and weird to me and is probably my biggest pet peeve in all of Legacy haha. What's he so afraid of? Dying? Cos he just killed himself!
BUT if he knew what he was in for, either through word of mouth or his own experiences previously, you could totally imagine why he might prefer jumping into a giant fan than get stuck in this endless cycle of being de- and re-rezzed for the enjoyment of the mob.
SO YES UM that's all. Thanks for reading. Ehehhhehhh to reward you:
