I found Dr. Ruth's Guide for Married Lovers on my parents' bookshelf and read it. Dr. Ruth was a big fan of recommending masturbation to frigid women, and like most psychiatry books designed to entertain, it had a lot of little anecdotes from the patients. That's where I picked up the technique. One night I was reading a V.C. Andrews book on the floor of my room (I believe it was Dawn and after some experimenting, figured things out.

I too was a little weirded out by the junk so I did it over my underwear. I soon got over that.

I don't want to sound like a dick guy here, but you are the second woman to say that they were freaked out by their own body parts.

What's up with that? I'm not being a perve, I'm just curious. I mean like girl parts are much prettier than guy parts and yet we managed to pump our junk at an early age.

What specifically grossed you out about your area - and what made you feel weird about it?

It wasn't like "I'm afraid my vagina bites" or anything, it's just a complicated area when you first get accquainted with it. I'd assume the the trepidation guys have when they first approach a woman's genitals is similar to what that woman felt when she first checked things out herself. Also it's much less solid than a dong, not to mention less visible, and takes more experimentation. Sometimes baby steps are necessary.

P.S. I do not love V.C. Andrews but I was always finding them at garage sales so I read a lot of them in high school. And when I find the old ones at my parents' house I still read them as I eat cereal... easy reading for the AM.

For me V.C. Andrews was sorta a way to read porn in public when I was like 12 without the social stigma of reading porn in public.

Actually, in a book: The New Women's Our Bodies, Our Selves. My mom gave it to me to teach me about sex and the super liberal hippie chicks had a whole chapter on masturbation! Whoo-hoo!
