How did you forget to tag this? I thought I was going crazy when I clicked on the tag on another poll and didn't see this poll on the page, even though I knew I already voted. Then I went to my friends page and noticed it wasn't tagged, so I tagged it.

People who voted for Metallica over Black Sabbath must have listened to Black Sabbath, heard that it sounded exactly the same, and just assumed it was a Metallica album.

I can't speak for anyone else, but they don't sound alike to me. Rather, I simply prefer Metallica over Sabbath.

LOL...I think every Metal band owes a huge debt to Sabbath...I mean most Metal riff's are some version of a Sabbath riff anyway : )

Absolutely. Sabbath basically came up with all the musical ideas metal would use for decades afterwards, plus quite a few that never really got picked up on.

In particular, Metallica's core sound and essentially thrash metal as a whole was invented by Black Sabbath in "Symptom of the Universe" - except they get bored of it by the end of the song and segue into some Spanish guitar, instead of milking it for album after album.

Metallica were invited to contribute to the all-star Sabbath tribute album "Nativity in Black" (best known for the 1000 Homo DJs cover of "Supernaut"). The song they wanted to cover was indeed "Symptom of the Universe". When they were told that Sepultura had claimed that one first, they threw a hissy fit and refused to be on the album.

Although I picked Zep over Maiden, I don't think Led Zeppelin is metal. I think they have some Metal songs, but they are more Rock.

Though I agree with you, they haven't done well under classic rock in previous years.

Well no accounting for taste. And from some of the things that people have voted for...well they just don't know much about music history or what came from where....

Yay someone else gets it! But I think that the Low E pedaling can be attributed to Children of the Grave and Into The Void, which were on Master of Reality their third album, which actually came out the same year as Paranoid...
I actually did a bit of research on this for this : http://inventingthesteel.tumblr.com/search/Inventing+the+steel
