This summer, in fact, I'm going to be a representative for the RAF and the American Air Force at the Royal Air Tattoo. The RAF is the only branch of the military that openly recruits gay men. I'm being flown in on a jet fighter and I get to make a big speech and play action man for the day with a load of guys

I haven't been to an airshow in years but used to go to all the major ones in the UK. If you're into military aircraft and/or aerobatics displays, then the RIAT is a LOT of fun; if not, it's a massive piece of land with portaloos, burger vans (sorry, "Food Villages"), market stalls selling all sorts of aircraft/military bits and pieces (you might get a greatcoat there, but it's unlikely to be cheap!), and lots and LOTS of aircraft, both on the ground and in the air. Take (very) comfortable walking shoes and prepare for all weathers

Yes, I realized that air shows are bit on the 'large event' scale, and so I figured it best to add in the bit about whether or not someone had actually already planned on going and if not, they'd better like airshows!

It looks like a lot of fun to me - I've been to a couple in my lifetime, but I'm not a huge enthusiast.

How come the first time in almost 10 years I book a fabulous foreign holiday, I manage to book it at the precisely wrong time????

I've been going to the RAT off and on for years, and come from an RAF background, so I do love going there. I also live about an hour away from Birmingham, so I could be going to the convention with Gareth and everyone.

But no. I manage to book the holiday from 14th - 26th July - perfectly missing both events.
