Rico is gone

The vet left a couple of minutes ago, carrying the tiny bundle that is all the physical remains of Rico. Being the cat he was, he was stubbornly continuing to go to the sink for water, and he still used the box to the end. He got to sit in a pool of sun this morning, but he wasn't interested in looking out the window, something he usually loved to ( Read more... )

You did the right thing. Never doubt it. Animals don't think of death with dread, and they don't count the hours. They live in the moment, and when the moments are no longer pleasant or pain-free, they also don't think "It'll go away." They are in pain. Period. You loved this cat deeply, and showed that love even through your grief, by ensuring Rico's pain would end swiftly and gently, while surrounded by his people.

In Cat Heaven, there are lovely meadows crossed by clear brooks full of fascinating fish, with plenty of trees to climb and interesting things to smell and chase. There are fields of catnip and even deserts with swift lizards. All the cats there can run and play and leap about, or sit and purr in the laps of angels (whose robes have pockets full of cat toys), or visit People Heaven through special catflap doors. The weather is always nice, and there is no pain, and there are no rocking chairs or vacuum cleaners, ever.
