Attacks on marriage?

I live in New Hampshire, where same-sex marriages were legalized recently. There is now a bill before the state legislature to change this recognition into "civil unions" and I sent a message to a number of my legislators to voice my opposition ( Read more... )

The second letter makes me want to move to NH, just so I could vote against the person. I'd also like to know how they square MA being one of the first states to legalize same-sex marriage, yet having one of the lowest divorce rates in the nation. Yeah, I know correlation isn't causation, but if same-sex marriage were so damaging to the institution, you'd think you'd see more divorce.

While I can't agree with Libertarians, this is one issue I can agree with some of them on: the government needs to get out of marriage entirely. Some countries do civil unions for everyone, and if you want a marriage, you have to go to the religious institution of your choice.

Geez. Your well-reasoned, intelligent and thoughtful letter is met with a religious rant that not only does not address ANY of your points, but is full of spelling and grammar errors, as well as completely fallacious information about our Founding Fathers and their (imagined) intent? Yuck.

I think you should contact your local newspaper or TV news website and see if they would consider running your letter and hers in their entirety. Probably too long, but I bet it would open the eyes of many of her constituents. Hmm, come to think of it, there might even be some national venues that could be willing, like Salon.com...

I couldn't even force myself to read Tremblay's "letter" to you with all of its "quotes" and ALL CAPS. And let's not forget the EXCLAMATION points! It reads like a "letter" from a SIXTH grader. Some people really need to be VOTED out of "office."

The sad thing about people like this holding office is that they probably won't listen. Even if they got an overwhelming majority of responses from folks who oppose the bill, they have already decided that their version of what's fair and right is the singular truth and everybody else is wrong.
