premise?
farmbasket's story begins with an old drunk of a wizard who lives in rural Italy, and accidentally curses all the inhabitants of a farm near his tower. He turns all the people into animals, and in the midst of his inebriated spellcasting, tears space-time asunder. This rift begins to widen, drawing in people from numerous worlds and dimensions to La Porta Farm & Ranch, Italy!
But the curse of long ago still lingers on the farm; when you're hugged by someone of the opposite sex, you turn into animals! If you were already an animal, well, enjoy your new human body for a couple hours.
Now, with the wind at your back and rolling green acres ahead, what will you do? Where will you explore? What kind of people will you meet? Will you grow crops? Practice archery? Declare yourself Farm King and try to take over?
Maybe you'll go swimming in the lake, or explore the mysterious abandoned fairground. There's tons of places to investigate. Crops grow faster on the farm because of all the magic in the air, and there are plenty of wild farm animals roaming around. Cows, pigs, chickens, you name it.
You're stuck here, just outside the plateau city of Civita. The farm is watched over by the spiteful wizard, who sits in his tower all day drinking and casting bizarre spells to mess with you. The farm is surrounded by various places of interest, such as a deep lake filled with oddities, the wizard's tower, barns, and a rusty old fairground.
Be wary of that area... it's rumored to be haunted, and not just by ghosts! There is a large, rust-covered ferris wheel and a haymaze, among other things.
Farmhouses are lined up next to the barns. Three people to a farmhouse, unless you share a bed! The key's under the welcome mat.
This farm also holds many secrets about just what happened before you showed up. And there's hints that aliens may even be watching this place...
(This game was inspired by another, long-retired RP. So if it sounds similar, maybe you played there!)
what counts as an animal?
It depends on whatever animal, bug, or other living creature suits you best! This includes mythical creatures (within reason) such as griffins, unicorns, etc. If it applies to your canon it can also be a creature indigenous to your character's world, ie Pokemon or mash-up animals from ATLA.
Animals who get hugged become human. (This does not apply to local animals.) They still have animal minds, so they can't talk (unless they could in canon). Anthro characters can become full animal or full human, you can specify which in your app. The effects are temporary; they can last a few hours or however long you prefer. Characters will not change back with their clothes! Since animals cannot wear clothes!!
Robots will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. In terms of large machines such as Transformers, immobile bots, etc; how you apply the curse is up to you. They can become robotic animals (like Beast Wars) or they can become humans for a longer period, or anything you want.
If your character can change shape at will, (such as Yoruichi Shihouin from Bleach), they will be stuck in animal form for a period of time.
there's a town nearby?
Yes, indeed. Civita, which is but a short half-hour walk along the dirt road outside the fence, has stores and other things. It's a small town of just 100 people, though, so try not to get on their bad side if you want food and other conveniences! There could be other towns further away, but who knows how far...? The town has a church, a few convenience stores, a gun shop, and other businesses.
what's stopping me from running off?
Miles and miles of rolling green hills. And when you turn back, the farm will always just be in sight over the hill behind you. Civita folk don't trust outsiders, so they're gonna tell you the quickest way out of town is "down the road and out of our sight."
That said, there is a long way you can go in any direction before you find yourself drawn back. You'll have a lot of breathing room.
can we keep our powers?
Everyone's "power levels" will be kept at the "strong" level. If you could lift buildings before, you are still really damn strong, but you can't do anything impossible like that anymore. People with magical abilities can still use them, but not to their full potential. Basically no one is stronger than the Wizard himself, because then you could bust up into his house and make demands and that wouldn't be very cool. Magical items are on a case-by-case basis; instant-death magic or items such as the Death Note will not work.
what happens if I die?
Here's the God's honest; Death is messy. The Wizard doesn't need any nosy police-types around, so you just straight up can't die. Not by gunshot, or gutting, or anything. You can certainly have those things happen to you, but instead of dying, you'll lay there for maybe a day to a week (depending on the cause) until your body heals. Drowning will cause you to wash up on the lake beach, and wake up sputtering water and feeling like a man thrown overboard.
what's the policy on adult content?
Sex and violence always happen in roleplay. It's something you really can't avoid! So yes, it's all allowed behind cuts. If we see anything that borders on "bad taste", we'll give you a warning.
how do characters communicate?
iPhones, bitch! That's right, everyone now has an iPhone which they can use for local texts, video, pictures and phone calls. And, you know, whatever other random stuff iPhones do. These particular models have unfolding parts to stand the device up sideways or right side up. Go technology!
do you allow AUs or OCs?
At this time, we don't. However... we do allow you to bring characters over from previous RPs (no matter when they were dropped or how active that game is now). Any effects from that game, such as memory alteration, humanizing, extra powers- it's fine here. Just be sensible about it.
where do we post things?
As it stands, we have the OOC comm, barnhousing, and we have one IC comm, farmbasket. You can post prose or action/text/video/etc all in one comm. If people want to separate them later we can.
Farmbasket is meant to be shaped by the players; if you have ideas, or suggestions on what would make the game more appealing (if you're on the fence about applying or anything), just let us know! Odds are we've just been waiting for the suggestion.
Remember, if it doesn't make sense, just relax! A wizard did it. Everything is fine. Ask a question and we will answer.
