Author Chuck Wendig on HIMYM finale

Aug 19, 2014 12:50

A bit late to the party on this one, but I found this blog entry by author Chuck Wendig to cover exactly why the AUE failed so spectacularly badly. Focuses mainly on Ted/Mother, but does spend a good deal of time on why Robin and Ted wouldn't work, and does mention how good Barney and Robin are for each other.

Never saw this one before, absolutely love it. Gonna tweet that to CFB the next time he opens his mouth.

You can’t build some fancy skyscraper and then put a giant ceramic clown taking a dump at the top of it.

Perfect analogy.

The skyscraper analogy is even more apt due to Ted's occupation. I knew as soon as I saw this piece that I had to share it here.

Interesting but this is pretty much all the reviews that were written about the episode and show that are bad reviews. Going full circle isn't bad but when it's done so underhandedly that full circle becomes nothing but a flat box. They have a point about giving this show a good send off but giving the show a send off that seemed to drag on and on got boring by the end of the shows run *coughs T/R* but I really like this article it's 100% true on all of our feelings on this.

There's full circle, where the characters are placed in the same situation as they started, but now have the abilities to make different or better choices, and there's back to square one, where they're back where they started and not a damned thing has changed. One can be satisfying if done right, the other, well that was the AUE.

You know you gave me some feels about Barney playing the violin again so I had an idea for a fic I want to run by you. It's mostly a Barney fic but has a married BR in it ( ... )

Sure, bring it on. I've always been intrigued by the idea of Barney playing the violin again -and have something in the works to that end- and I suspect I'm not the only one. Do it.

Yes to everything in your finale idea. Especially not asking one's teenage kids for permission to bang their aunt, whom they apparently now believe you've had the hots for all along, even while supposedly enraptured with their now deceased mother. Somebody take Ted's "father of the year" mug back. He's lost the privilege.

Totally forgot about the Bro-Code. In the AUE- Ted went after his Bro's X-wife. I guess Barney gets to punch Ted in the GROIN!

Yeah, that's got to be a worse infraction. Ted's entitled to cut Barney out of his life for sleeping with his ex-girlfriend, but it's perfectly okay to chase after Barney's ex-wife? Oh, Ted, Ted, Teddy, Ted, this cannot end well. I agree with the above sentiment.

That's the problem here, I don't give a f*ck about the supposed reason why Robin wanted to run out on Barney on her wedding day. She did not have any feelings whatsoever for Ted. She simply liked that he gives and finds her things, she loves Barney NOT Ted ( ... )

Pretty much. Robin loved Barney, she married Barney, and did not love Ted or want a romance or future with him. A rational person would have seen the signs and backed off.

The only way this article would've been more on-point as to how I personally felt about it the ending would be if they included all of the horrible sexist stuff too. And it's still really really really on-point.

Seriously. Add the sexist stuff in there, a bit more focus on how B/R's relationship got shafted and we're perfect here.

Boy, this is correct that script was so sexist and not at all good for women. I don't care if this is a guys show, most of the audience is women so putting that script on air is part of why most of the women disliked or plan hated that ending.

I would say that it would be interesting to see the finale written from a woman's POV, but that's already covered in some excellent fanfic, and there is the small fact that no woman would have written that sexist pile of poop. For a show that was ostensibly all about finding the main character's ideal woman, I don't think the showrunners like women very much, or at least not their own female characters. Robin and Lily lost all agency in the AUE, and poor Tracy's reward is...being dead, so she can be dead with her dead boyfriend after popping out two mini-Teds? Yeah, really, no. Imagine if the men on the show were written in the finale like the women were.

Great article. Hits on so many pertinant points and hits home again why I absolutely loathed the finale with every atom of my body.

Apologies if this article has been posted before but after reading the above article I went searching for other like minded pieces to remind myself it wasn't just one group of fans that didn't like the abysmal ending. I stumbled across this one. It pretty much sums up my feelings exactly..

Excellent article. Thanks for sharing. It wasn't only one group of fans. That was a bad finale. Loathing it with every atom of one's body is a normal and natural reaction, IMO. The characters, and the fans, deserved much better.
