Holidays

Hi, all - sorry I haven't posted in a while! Having only started the blog a couple of weeks ago, it never really occurred to me that people would be so quick to "miss" me. :-) But it's sweet of you to inquire. I'm totally fine - I just had a different holiday weekend than I expected.

I was working Friday night when I got a great surprise - at a little before midnight, a friend of mine from high school walked through the door! Luckily it was slow enough that we were able to spend a little time catching up. It turns out that Bria works not far from the Bar, on the production staff of a nighttime TV newscast. She'd just gotten off work, so she stopped by with a few colleagues. I bought them all a round of drinks on the house, and they tipped the hell out of me the rest of the night, so it worked out well. :-)

Anyway, Bria told me that she'd be heading out to Westhampton in the morning for the rest of the holiday weekend. Between her late work hours and the nightmare that is Long Island Expressway traffic on a holiday weekend Friday evening (even at midnight), she figured Saturday morning would be a better bet. Then she asked me if I wanted to join her and her friends in their beach house for the rest of the weekend - with the caveat that I might not get a whole bed to myself, but people were supposedly pretty friendly and casual with sharing space in their house.

I immediately asked Todd if I could take Saturday and Sunday nights off, and he said as long as I got someone to cover the shifts, it'd be fine. Jocelyn overheard us, and said she's dying for hours, so within thirty seconds my plans for the holiday changed 180 degrees.

I'm not going to go into a whole lot of detail about the weekend, but it was a bizarre combination of highly relaxing and absolutely exhausting. The weather cooperated for the most part, though there was some rain - but that just drove the parties indoors. We ate a few times at this fantastic "shack" called John Scott's, where I ate the best steamers and the best steak sandwiches of my entire life, and we all had some great late-night talks in the house after drinking too much. I think I have a new group of friends! It was great reconnecting with someone I cared about but hadn't spoken to in so long. I got back last night in time to carry out my original July 4 plans, joining my cousin and her husband on their apartment balcony to watch the Macy's fireworks over South Street Seaport, which were lovely.

I've mostly recovered, and I had one of the earlier shifts tonight at the Bar, getting off right after the Yankees closed the door on the Indians, 11-3. A much nicer result than last night's, which we will never mention again.

I promise, the next real entry will have more to do with actual barmaidery. ;-) I hope you all had a wonderful extended Independence Day weekend!
