I know basically all of you have already suffered this, and I couldn't really understand it because I hadn't been through it. Preferred hours: 25 +-5, Hours this week: 12, Hours next week: 13 I'm not as worried as I could be because know I'm going for a shift interview and so hopefully that'll make things better, at least put me back into the 20 ( Read more... )

I on average work 8 hours a week. I am a full-time high school student and that is really all that I can work. I would say that I do continue to work because I love this job--it is the best one that I have had. I love the people and I just love Starbucks.

This, except I average 10, work in a licensed store, and work mostly to support myself best I can. My parents are both in and out of jobs right now (with this economy being zero help) and going off to college next year is going to put my family in huge economic trouble.

At least working roughly ten hours a week pays for my gas, money, and school-related expenses (field trips, dances, club dues, etc.). And it's good to just have the job experience, good to put on my resume, looks good for college, and gives me spending money for the first time in my life.

I do it to keep my name in the system during the school year and that way I can work more when I go home for breaks. It's also a good way to keep my reviews up to date and so I keep getting raises. Plus, tips for ten hours a week aren't that bad, it's gas money or a dinner out.

We haven't hired anyone since October and as a result have almost more shifts than baristas right now. We're all getting okay amounts of hours though. The partners in my store who only work one day a week do it for different reasons. M is a seventh grade teacher who works one day a week during the school year so she can work more often during the summer. J is a freelancer who works one day a week for his employee discount I think. He comes in every day and gets 8 shots, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to pay full price for that every day.

That is an awesome reason. XD

Seriously! I wouldn't get nearly as many drinks from the bux if I didn't work there. I think he was initially in it for the benefits, but he has a young daughter and another on the way so I don't think he has time for 20 hours a week, so he takes his benefits in expensive coffee.

"...but seriously whyyyyyy did we just hire four new partners within the past 6 weeks?"

Probably because the availability of current partners is failing to meet the need of the store. Sad but true!

In my store, people who are scheduled less than 10 hours a week are people who have extremely limited availability. Personally, I feel most bad for the people getting 17 or 18 hours a week because they just barely don't qualify for the benefits.

Although with the new scheduling optimization, how much longer are we going to have people who work less than 10 hours, anyway?

It wasn't so much that our current partners didn't have the availability, it was more so that she was mad no one was picking up shifts when someone called in. Which I'm sure would be different now. Obviously I can understand one or two new hires. I love my manager but I'm still a bit annoyed :S

Ahhhhh. Yeah. I can sort of see why she's pissed. Our baristas spend ENDLESS amounts of time complaining how they have no hours, they need hours!, they have bills (special bills, that no one else has, apparently) -- but if someone needs a shift covered or someone is sick or someone calls out or doesn't show up:

Me: Hey, it's henpecked, uhm, Sickey Sickerson can't work their 12-4 tomorrow, and I know you said you need hours, want to come in?
Barista: Uhm, I can't, I was going to go get my eyebrows done.
Me: Oh, okay. *I guess you don't need hours THAT much*

I would be annoyed at new people eating up all the hours we don't have, too.

Yeah, and it sucks that we're all punished for it, even the ones who stay late, go home early to accommodate what we need for labour. I've got to a point where I tell my manager/shift/whoever that, no, unfortunately I wont go home early because I have car and insurance payments.

Four new partners! Wow!

I think our district is in a hiring freeze.

same.

actually, I think the entire state of AZ is in a hiring freeze right now.

(You know something's up when you have shifts working Barista shifts at least twice a week... no complaints here though, since I get hours and I get to bar allll night!)
