That picture made me smile with recognition! Our first two cats, both longhairs, have always kept a bit of a distance to the fireplace, but our newest is a shorthair, and she enjoys sitting right up close. She stares into the flames, too, as if hypnotised or thinking deep thoughts. It's an adorable sight. :)
We've had our first week or two of snow here that melted away, and there have been unseasonally mild temperatures for most of November. I'm glad for that; happier the longer the snow takes to come and settle, I must admit. The winter feels endless when there's snow for six months, and we're already down to an estimated four-five this year. Yay!
Good to see you! I hadn't thought about it until you said it, but it makes sense that it would be the short-haired cats who are drawn to the warmth. Morsel has long hair and he's never sat that close; I think he just hasn't needed to. But Jack had his eyes squeezed shut and you could tell he was in a total state of bliss.
Glad you seem to be in for a shorter winter this year. I still think about that post you wrote so long ago, about the luxury of lying on the carpet in the first spring sunlight.
Today was the first day of (supposedly, according to the weather shamans) three dry days, which is a relief because it will give the leaves on the ground, as well as the ones that fall soon, a chance to lay there dry. Tuesday, before it rains again, I'll go and suck them up with the mulching mower. The "good" leaves will go on the garden beds, and the walnut leaves will be bagged up to put out with the yard waste.
Unfortunately, no sun here. It's been gloomy all day, though I did manage to get out and take a walk, equipping myself with mittens and the nice knitted hat Jenny made me.
That is SO cute!!! It looks like a beautiful fire. Do you use that to heat your home or just for atmosphere? I have a similar wood burning stove that I am using for heating my home with a stove top fan. That's actually what I was searching for when your blog popped up on search results. Anyway I was looking for some guidance to verify what I was reading at stovetopfanreviews as to which are the best ones to use.
