It looks like the leaves are just starting to turn.

In general our fall color has been a little late this year. The big-leaf maples and some vine maples are the ones with the yellow leaves. Aside from this one particular spot, this area is mainly Douglas fir interspersed with big-leaf maples, so you see this lush green fir forest lit up with yellow here and there. Very pretty. In other areas, we have a whole range of fall colors, from orange to bright, flaming red.

Oooh, so pretty! I've always loved leafy trees with really low-hanging branches, especially near rivers and streams. One of my favorite things about the parks I wandered around in Vancouver years ago! It's definitely not quite as leafy around my area.

I remember going back down to SoCal to visit about five years ago, and getting there and thinking, "They've trimmed all the trees lower"--because I'd gotten so used to tall trees up here. Also, I kept thinking that there definitely weren't enough trees around. The Pacific Northwest is so lush when it comes to nature and forests. And waterfalls, and ponds, rivers and lakes.

Haha, I can imagine! Though I must admit, at least in the neighborhood I'm living in now, there are MUCH more tall, old trees around in Van Nuys than there are in San Diego. The only trees that are anything near "tall" I can recall in all my years in SD were 20-year-old eucalyptus trees, really. But here, there are actually many around with trunks about half as wide as my car! It's been nice to see some of those for a change.

I'm lucky. Some of the trees in my neighborhood are 60-100 ft. tall. That's one of the first things I noticed about this neighborhood that really drew me, having so many trees. And of course, once you get outside Eugene, there are forests in many places nearby. Some even in town, like the one shown here.
