A Holmesian Doctor

So I saw the trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes film (with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson) today and it got me thinking.

A Holmesian Doctor )

I had a dirty crush on Jeremy Brett's Holmes. UNF.

I can see where you're coming from and I like the direction you're taking. I think really it's down to the viewers expecting a little more action in their Who these days.

Mind, Ten did come out with some blinding deductions whilst channeling his inner McGyver. I could see Eleven being the one to go that way, but we've also seen pictures of him running; however, it's exciting to speculate. :)

Oh I have nothing against running. Holmes did quite a bit of running.

I'd just like something different from the "leap in screwdriver first" approch we had with Nine and Ten. It worked for them. But each Doctor is supposed to be different. Give us an analytical Doctor.

I have high hopes that the Doctor who dresses like a geek, will act like one and follow through with the science. Being a man of action like Ten got him in a lot of trouble, maybe he'll temper that gung ho enthusiasm with some caution.

Which would be a very good thing indeed.

He's running through lives like nobodys busisness. He needs to be more careful.

The Canon Holmes is actually quite the action hero. He's a boxer, singlestick player, and bartitsu expert. It's a shame that Basil Rathbone never got to show off his fencing skills in his series of Holmes films. I'd be thrilled if Eleven was a little bit Holmesian.

This new film is going to be worth it just for Jude Law as Watson. He seems perfect. I almost don't even care about Downey.

My thinking is "It's Holmes". It won't be Jeremy Brett but it's Holmes.

That'll do me.

I like the icon.

Right! I'm in a minority, but I don't care for Brett as Holmes. I don't dislike him, exactly, but he isn't my favorite (that'd be the lovely fellow in my icon--I have ton of them. :D)

Well Holmes has always been a bit of an action man (he used a system of japanese wrestling to survive his battle with Moriarty)

It's just not played up as much as his mental skills.

He'd look pretty good in a deerstalker.

Cept Holmes never actually wore a Deerstalker.

As the name suggests a Deerstalker is for wearing in the countryside when hunting. In town is would look pretty silly.

Holmes probably wore either a top hat or a bowler if he was out and about in town.

But I know what you mean. It might just tame that hair.

This is funny--I've been powering my way through the collected stories of Sherlock Holmes, and I've been struck again and again by how Doctorish he is. Or how Holmesian the Doctor is, rather, seeing as it's more likely the Doctor was inspired partially by Holmes than the other way around, Doyle being dead by the time the series started airing and all. I'd absolutely love it if Eleven were a Holmesian sort.
