Thanks so much for this. Not only was it a good overview of Castiel's journey, but it gave me some different perspective on his character. I really loved him when he was introduced and through Swan Song. While I liked some of his S6 arc, I've always had a problem with how he could have pulled Dean's "soul" from hell (even leaving the handprint), but grabbed Sam and somehow didn't even realize he'd left Sam's soul behind -- not to mention the fact that it took the attack of garrison to get Dean but Cas alone got Sam. Then not answering Sam's prayers when he knew there was a problem? Like Sam I questioned whether Cas didn't bring him back soulless on purpose. I think Castiel's reaction says he didn't -- I just have to accept it all as truth no matter how unsatisfying it felt. Then breaking Sam's wall just to unsuccessfully distract Dean -- well, with friends like that ( ... )
