Nice review- although I had a lot more issues with the underlying logic; not just of the whole Lisa and Ben kidnap and resolution than you did;/ as in, one would think checking demonic hostages for possesion would be a no-brainer by now! and I also wonder how they'll reconcile the home invasion with the accident story, not to mention the neighbors' memories!
The Castiel scene was great, though, and probably some help to Dean. I do wish the season had involved itself more with the War in Heaven, given the issues, it should have. And since Castiel learned so much from the Winchesters and the events of previous seasons, he might also have learned what comes of keeping relevant secrets from those who need to know!
Still, it's really nice to see a thoughtful, sympathetic review.
Well, I'm going to go completely against the majority and say that Dean was right to wipe their minds mainly because of what DemonLisa said about Ben being the worst mistake of her life. It doesn't matter if it was true or not, Lisa and the kid would have been haunted by those words forever, IMO. Kudos to Dean for trying to give them back their innocence even though he would be losing them forever and for good-which is what *I* think was uppermost in his mind when he asked Cas to do it-and his almost doubling over in pain in the hallway at their loss, only reinforced that for me. What. A. Scene. Emmy-worthy w/o a doubt. It seems like the more popular choice is to bash him for it right now, but if we never hear of Lisa and Ben again, I guess we can assume that they stayed safe and regained their normal life, happy and blissful in their ignorance-and through a sacrifice that most just want to vilify him for, Dean might actually win one. Time will tell, I guess

This post needs more comments. Excellent analysis, and I appreciate the work you did in reasoning all this out and then writing it down.
I desperately wanted Dean to say, Don't you see, you're doing the exact same thing Sam did, when he deliberately lied to us all, listened to and cooperated secretly with Ruby, and wound up opening the door to Lucifer's cage? That's why I can't trust you - you're making all the same mistakes for all the same reasons, and you can't even see it, any more than he could. You both believed you were doing the necessary thing, that you didn't have any other viable choice, that the stakes were too high to take a chance on failing - and you're both wrong. Now I'm going to start this comment off by disagreeing with you. (LOL
